Joo Ji-hoon (The Spy Gone North) is certainly going to start off 2019 with a bang, isn’t he? On the heels of his long-awaited zombie sageuk Kingdom in late January, he’ll be appearing in his second drama in as many months in MBC’s upcoming sci-fi drama Item. I’ve been antsy to see what’s in store for us with this show, so I’m happy to finally get some posters and a brief teaser to whet our appetites.
The show’s synopsis is intriguing, not least because I’m getting some Alhambra vibes, which can only be a good thing in my book (I’m loving that show): Item will center around a prosecutor, acriminal profiler, and a sociopath corporate executive who are all connected to various mysterious objects that bestow supernatural powers onto its owners. Joo Ji-hoon will play the just and warm-hearted prosecutor, whose poster reads, “Unbelievable things are happening to us.”
Joo Ji-hoon narrates the same in the newly released trailer, as we get flashes of a figure in a church, a suspended body hanging in midair, and what looks like an overturned subway car. Our hero prosecutor looks like he’s facing a formidable foe, as he continues that “ominous” events keep happening and that what’s coming will be beyond their contemplation.
Hopefully, he’ll find a useful ally in Jin Se-yeon’s (Grand Prince) character, a criminal profiler who doesn’t bat an eyelash at the most gruesome of crime scenes. Described as a coldly logical professional with outstanding focus and rationality, Jin Se-yeon’s character poster quotes her: “The culprit likely wants this case to get bigger.”
I’m hoping her character does provide some meaningful support to Joo Ji-hoon, because I can already tell that they have their work cut out for them as they face Kim Kang-woo’s (My Husband Oh Jak-doo) sociopath. I mean, even his poster shows that he’s a little cray, where he asks why people believe in God: “I am God.” Creepy.
Item will follow currently airing Bad Detective on MBC’s Monday-Tuesday slot, starting this coming February.
