After the conclusion of Stone Ocean in 2022, fans of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure are excited to see the anime return with an adaptation of Steel Ball Run.
Announcement of the Steel Ball Run Anime Adaptation
Studio David Production made an exciting announcement during the JOJODay stage event regarding the upcoming Steel Ball Run anime series. A brief teaser revealed a fascinating setting: the year 1890, just two years following the original series, Phantom Blood & Battle Tendency. The story follows Johnny Joestar, a paraplegic ex-jockey who participates in a perilous cross-country horse race from San Diego to New York.
A Race for Glory and Survival
The stakes are high in this intense competition, with a staggering $50 million prize awaiting the winner. However, for Johnny, the race signifies more than just financial gain—it’s a chance to learn from Gyro Zeppeli, a fellow racer and former Neapolitan executioner, whose unique steel balls briefly restored Johnny’s mobility. As the race progresses, both men find themselves in danger, pursued by other participants willing to kill at the behest of the race’s sponsor, Steven Steel.
Background on Steel Ball Run and Its Significance
Steel Ball Run stands as the seventh main arc of Hirohiko Araki’s acclaimed Jojo manga series, which was serialized from 2004 to 2011. This arc introduced a new continuity within the expansive Jojo’s universe, leading to subsequent stories in JoJolion and the current The JoJoLands manga, set many centuries later.
Celebrating the New Anime with an Art Exhibition
In celebration of the Steel Ball Run adaptation, a special caravan exhibition is set to showcase original monochrome art and colored reproductions from the Steel Ball Run manga. According to JoJoNews, the exhibition will feature the transcript of the first chapter and offer exclusive merchandise related to Steel Ball Run and its sequel series. The event kicks off in Shibuya from April 13-24 before moving to other locations throughout Japan.
What to Expect from the Steel Ball Run Anime
While the Steel Ball Run anime currently lacks a specified release window, fans can look forward to the first volume of the manga arriving in English in North American stores on May 27.
