You may recall a breathtaking moment from the trailer where Yelena falls from the Merdeka 118, a skyscraper in Kuala Lumpur. Florence Pugh actually performed this daring stunt, expressing her excitement upon reading the script. Director Jake Schreier revealed that Disney’s health and safety team was initially cautious about this dangerous shot, given that the Merdeka stands at 678.2 meters (2,227 feet), making it the second-tallest building in the world after the Burj Khalifa. Despite the risks, Schreier insisted that the film needed a sequence with “a little more weight and surprise,” and Pugh’s enthusiasm to take the plunge helped persuade Disney. She has a notable love for heights and wanted to challenge herself with the spectacular stunt.

Behind the Scenes: Additional Real-life Action Sequences

It turns out that Pugh’s sky-high stunt isn’t the only genuine action in Thunderbolts. The explosive scene where Yelena walks away from a building blast was also created using real effects. Schreier disclosed that this particular moment was filmed shortly after they deconstructed the Merdeka rig. Given the number of explosions in past MCU films, Thunderbolts taking a fresh approach with real stunts provides a thrilling change of pace. This release comes at an interesting time since stunt performers are set to receive Oscar recognition soon.
