Why The Last of Us Co-Showrunner Advocated for Joel’s Therapy Journey

The Surprising Twist in The Last of Us Season Two Premiere

The Last of Us season two kicked off with familiar elements that fans have come to expect: intense tension, emotional trauma, a significant time jump, and chilling infected encounters. However, one unexpected highlight was the poignant scene featuring Joel (Pedro Pascal) receiving therapy from Gail, portrayed by the talented Catherine O’Hara.

Exploring Therapy in a Post-Apocalyptic World

In a recent interview with Variety, co-showrunner Craig Mazin revealed that he had initially considered incorporating this therapeutic angle in season one. However, due to time constraints, it had to be pushed to the second season. With season two in development, Mazin decided to revisit this impactful concept.

“In all closed economies, certain skills are valued more than others,” Mazin explained. “For instance, if someone can repair shoes, that’s valuable. Teaching physics? Not so much anymore. But what if you were a therapist? That would be extraordinarily valuable. Everyone has experienced trauma; no one can claim they’ve had an easy ride in this world. Therapy is a powerful lens through which to explore people’s hidden struggles,” he added.

The Emotional Exchange Between Joel and Gail

The dynamic between Joel and Gail becomes a focal point of the episode. Gail is grappling with a significant loss, one she attributes to Joel, even as she understands the inevitability of his earlier decisions. This tension leads her to confront Joel about the brutal choice he made to protect Ellie (Bella Ramsey) at the conclusion of season one. Their dialogue is crafted as a high-stakes verbal “shootout,” according to Mazin.

“I’ve participated in enough therapy sessions to witness the rapid shift from laughter to tears and anger as emotions surface. Writing this scene was incredibly fulfilling. Filming and editing it were equally rewarding. It’s among my favorite scenes across both seasons, largely due to witnessing these two remarkable actors deliver their performances at an exceptional level,” Mazin expressed.
