Enhance Samsung One UI 7: Change This Key Setting for Better Performance

The first time I used a Samsung phone with One UI 7, I became concerned I was missing notifications. I typically check my lock screen for updates, and after a while of seeing nothing, I wondered if something was wrong. Fortunately, everything was functioning correctly; the confusion stemmed from Samsung’s change to a crucial default notification setting. Now, after using various phones with One UI 7, I quickly adjust this setting during setup, and if you rely on your lock screen for notifications, you should do the same.

What’s the Setting?

Samsung has made subtle changes to how it displays notification indicators on the lock screen in One UI 7. Previously, icons appeared centrally beneath the clock, making it easy to spot new notifications. Now, they’ve moved to the top right corner, appearing smaller and less noticeable, especially for those accustomed to checking the center of the screen.

By default, no additional notification details are shown either. It took me some time to figure out what changed, but once I saw the small icons in the corner, I sought to revert the lock screen’s functionality to something more practical. Thankfully, Samsung allows for customization, and you can modify how the lock screen displays notifications.

To restore a more informative display, navigate to Settings, then Notifications, and select Lock Screen Notifications. You have three display options: Dot, Icons, and Cards. The default is Icons, but for a better overview of your notifications on the lock screen, I recommend selecting Cards. This repositions icons under the clock, and pressing the power key lights up the screen, revealing cards with information.

These cards can be expanded for additional details and usually include interactive elements. It’s puzzling why Samsung selected the least helpful mode as the default, but it’s refreshing to have options once you realize why the lock screen seems so sparse at first use.

More One UI 7 Changes to Make

Adjusting the notification settings has become part of my routine every time I set up a Samsung device. Many of these changes are traditional defaults that have been standard for years, which don’t necessarily align with my preferences. Here are some additional adjustments I make:

  • Set the always-on screen to Scheduled in Settings, Lock Screen and AOD, Always-on Display, instead of the default tap-to-show option.
  • Change the default browser from Samsung’s app to Chrome for consistency with my other devices.
  • Switch from Samsung’s keyboard to Google’s Gboard for improved functionality.
  • Change the default ringtone and notification sound to distinguish my phone from others.
  • Adjust the home screen grid from 4×4 to 5×6, and sort the app drawer alphabetically for easier navigation.
  • Enable Wi-Fi Calling in the Quick Settings menu, as it’s not activated by default.
  • Switch the navigation mode to swipe gestures in Settings, Display, Navigation Bar.

Phones with One UI 7

Currently, I’ve been using One UI 7 on the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, but I also needed to adjust the notification setting on the Galaxy S24 Ultra after its update, along with the Galaxy S25 Ultra, Galaxy S25 Plus, and Galaxy A56. If you’ve purchased one of these models or are waiting for the One UI 7 update, remember to make these adjustments during setup.

Once configured, my Samsung phone is ready for daily use. One UI 7 operates smoothly, offering a user-friendly experience. While I still grapple with the Search icon placement at the top of the Settings screen, I appreciate Samsung’s efforts to keep our experience fresh.
