The rise of sophisticated digital assistants has gained momentum with the advent of tools like ChatGPT. Google’s Gemini comes impressively close to fulfilling the dream of an intuitive assistant, seamlessly merging into our daily lives through platforms such as Gmail and Maps.
However, the experience isn’t always smooth. Users often encounter AI errors, while issues with contextual memory can lead to confusion. Furthermore, some advanced functionalities, such as Project Mariner and certain features in ChatGPT, remain either limited or come at a high cost.
Not everyone is thrilled about paying for an AI subscription. So, what’s the alternative? OnePlus suggests starting from scratch and keeping things straightforward. Their OnePlus AI seems to embrace this philosophy, boasting a selection of meaningful features. Having tested it on the OnePlus 13s, I believe it would also resonate well with iPhone users.
A Revolutionary Mind

OnePlus has replaced the traditional two-stage alert slider found on its latest compact phone with a multi-functional button. This resembles the “Action Button” on current iPhones but offers an additional feature.
This pivotal feature is known as AI Plus Mind, which acts as a virtual memory vault for storing important information you want to access quickly. Be it a snapshot of a poster, screenshots, articles, or social media posts, tapping the Plus Key activates AI analysis, allowing you to keep your workflow uninterrupted while everything else is saved in the background.
In AI Plus Mind, saved items are organized by date and categorized into various sections like photos, social media, calendar events, and more.
Managing scattered ideas has been one of my daily challenges, as they tend to get lost in hundreds of screenshots and bookmarks across apps. AI Plus Mind offers a neat solution for this common struggle.

AI Plus Mind doesn’t just store content; it analyzes it. Using optical character recognition (OCR), it detects text in images and summarizes it efficiently. For instance, when I saved a screenshot of my calendar, AI Plus Mind accurately extracted all the details, which I could then share directly with my manager. The ease of use is truly remarkable.
Moreover, if you frequently read articles online and want to save them without complex tasks like bookmarking, just press the Plus Key. Your saved memory will include a screengrab, a concise summary of the article, and a direct link back to the original source, all in one action.
More Than Just a Memory Box

Every piece of content saved in AI Plus Mind is analyzed and turned into searchable tags, making it easy to recall past information. For example, if I saved a photo of my brother wearing a black shirt, I could merely search for “black,” and the AI would show me that image among other related items. This capability extends to tickets, bills, and various documents.
But AI Plus Mind also excels at managing chats. Since my work frequently spans multiple communication tools, I often miss important conversations. After saving key chats in AI Plus Mind, it efficiently summarized the discussions, noting names and events accurately. Searching through these conversations became a breeze.

Overall, AI Plus Mind represents a practical implementation of AI that simplifies information management. Its features eliminate the hassle of recalling details scattered across various apps and platforms.
Why Apple Should Pay Attention
Along with AI Plus Mind, OnePlus plans to introduce functions like automatic voice call translation, transcription, summarization, and an integrated AI app that encompasses various tasks. A comprehensive system-wide AI search feature will allow you to use natural language searching for local files, settings, and notes throughout your device. Google’s Gemini will also be integrated into key OnePlus applications.

AI Mind Space is particularly revolutionary, bearing similarities to Windows 11’s Recall while offering unique mobile capabilities. OnePlus claims all user data will be processed locally using a Trusted Execution Environment and Private Computing Cloud, ensuring privacy when saving sensitive information—although further details are still awaited.
While I will share more insights about the OnePlus 13s soon, my experience with its AI features has been overwhelmingly positive. It’s clear that OnePlus is addressing practical issues that other smartphone manufacturers have overlooked.
In contrast, Apple’s AI integration on the iPhone remains lackluster, currently relying on ChatGPT for tasks Siri struggles with. It’s striking to see Google’s Gemini outperform Apple Intelligence on iPhones. I sincerely hope Apple considers OnePlus’s advancements in its upcoming iOS updates.
