Experience Classic Resident Evil Vibes in This Steam Next Fest Demo

The latest Steam Next Fest has begun, unleashing a wave of exciting demo downloads. Among them, I’ve stumbled upon a potential new favorite that has quickly climbed to the top of my most-anticipated list.

Introducing Phase Zero. This game beautifully channels the essence of classics like Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis in all the right ways. Its journey kicks off even before reaching the main menu, featuring an eerie warning screen reminiscent of the PS1 era survival horror games.

As a kid, these types of screens sent chills down my spine. Now, they evoke a sense of nostalgic excitement. Phase Zero begins with the player waking up in a hospital, launching directly into a waking nightmare.

Are there zombies? Absolutely. Clunky tank controls? Yes, indeed. An inventory system packed with a map, files, and equippable weapons? Check. Puzzle elements with clues scattered throughout the environment? Double check. This is retro Resident Evil at its finest, and the small slice of gameplay has left me eager for more.

This past weekend was momentous for the Resident Evil franchise, with the announcement of RE9 titled Resident Evil: Requiem, set to release in February. The series will celebrate its 30th anniversary, and its enduring influence was evident across various showcases. Another exciting title generating buzz is Ground Zero, also highlighted during the Future Games Show Summer Showcase.

The developers at SPINA Studio describe Phase Zero as “a modern reimagining of the survival horror golden era classics,” where “the story unfolds in episodic chapters—each chapter featuring one of the two protagonists.”

Staying true to the spirit of classic Resident Evil, it includes “prerendered backgrounds, fixed cameras, and the core elements of PSX masterpieces.” Additionally, it merges nostalgic design with contemporary conveniences, all while respecting its iconic roots. I can certainly vouch for that.

What makes Phase Zero stand out from other horror games? Its mixture of retro vibes with modern gameplay creates a unique experience that fans of the genre will cherish.

Is Phase Zero available on multiple platforms? Currently, it is released on Steam, but check back for updates as it may expand to other platforms.

How does Phase Zero compare to earlier Resident Evil titles? It captures the essence of early survival horror while integrating contemporary enhancements, making it appealing to both nostalgic fans and new players alike.

When can players expect the full game release? While the demo is available now, the full game release date has yet to be announced. Keep an eye on updates from SPINA Studio for more information.
