Birn elaborated, “When this status quo shifts, numerous questions arise. What if total destruction unfolds? What does that mean for her? Is it lonely and tragic if humanity ends? Does she bear any responsibility? Can she effect change? These issues push her to the edge of pondering her own purpose and meaning in life. It’s a genuine existential crisis.”
Early in season three, Demerzel seeks counsel from a leader within the Luminist faith—a key element featured in season one—to navigate her internal turmoil.
“Like many of her choices, it’s hard to discern if her actions are beneficial or constructive,” Birn noted. “Inside the palace, no one knows her deepest secrets. She is constrained and reserved. These reflective moments on her decisions—examining both past and future—are significant, though it’s uncertain if they genuinely aid her or humanity.”
Demerzel houses the Prime Radiant, resembling a small jewelry box, in her chest cavity—almost where a human heart would reside. While practical, this choice carries deeper implications, as Birn highlighted.
“It’s fascinating to ponder where our humanity lies. We often associate feelings with the heart or soul. In her, there exists merely a mechanical component that holds immense relevance for the galaxy, affecting her choices and actions. I find this interplay particularly compelling.”
