Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix have struck gold with KPop Demon Hunters, a thrilling fantasy action film that introduces us to an electrifying trio of heroines. Not only do they combat evil, but they also deliver unforgettable music that lingers long after the credits roll.
This captivating soundtrack is a product of the exceptional partnership between filmmakers Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, along with talented songwriter EJAE. Known for her impactful work with K-pop giants like TWICE and Red Velvet, EJAE collaborated with composer Daniel Rojas during the film’s pre-production phase. Over the years, she shaped the songs for the fictional all-girl band Huntrix and their rivals, the Saja Boys, marking her debut in film songwriting.
In a recent interview with Forbes, EJAE shared her experience crafting songs that are destined to be “no-skips” as she lent her voice to the lead character, Rumi.
“It was a natural process because I’ve been singing all of Rumi’s parts,” EJAE explained. “I also performed Mira and Zoey’s parts, including the rap sections. Writing the songs was a way for me to connect deeply with the character.”
EJAE finds personal resonance in Rumi’s dual heritage, stating, “It’s beautiful to experience the balance between two cultures. As someone who is half-human and half-demon, I can identify with those pulling forces in my own life.”
This sentiment is particularly relatable today, especially for individuals from marginalized backgrounds. Recently, I’ve found myself captivated by the song “Golden,” which encapsulates this empowering message.
When writing the soundtrack, EJAE drew from her own life, particularly her knowledge of Korean culture. “I understand the idioms and narratives from K-dramas, and having trained as an idol myself gives me a unique perspective,” she shared. “I aimed to weave both Korean and English seamlessly in the lyrics.”
It’s no surprise she was chosen to voice Rumi, embodying her character with emotional depth. “Singing, in many ways, is a form of acting,” she reflected. “Writing the songs allowed me to tap into the emotions needed to portray Rumi authentically.”
EJAE admitted her journey had its challenges, saying, “At 25, I almost abandoned my ambitions of being an artist because I feared failing. Yet, here I am, living out my dreams.”
“If I ever became an artist, I wished to maintain a degree of anonymity, like an animated character,” she added, smiling at her unexpected journey into the spotlight.
