If you haven’t yet tuned in to New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt on Prime Video, you’re missing one of the funniest animes of the season. Despite the lack of buzz surrounding Studio Trigger’s sequel to the cult classic, its sharp humor stands out, particularly in the latest episode which tackles the playful yet contentious divide between Millennials and Gen Z.
In its sixth episode, aptly titled “The Brothers from Heaven,” the series transitions from its usual short story format into a cohesive narrative packed with pop culture references—in just 24 minutes! This isn’t the first time the show has tried this technique; the pilot also strayed from their traditional style to close a 13-year-long cliffhanger. In this episode, we finally meet the much-anticipated twin angel characters, juxtaposing the existing chaos.
Introducing chaos are the “twin twink angels,” Polyester and Polyurethane, voiced by Junya Enoki and Yūto Uemura in Japanese, as well as Hunter McCoy and Corey Wilder in English. Their appearance, hinted in the official trailer, creates a stir among Panty and Stocking and their arch-nemeses Scanty and Kneesocks. As it turns out, Polyester and Polyurethane are cousins to our favorite angel duo, sparking both hilarity and generational conflict.
This plot twist echoes the disruptive energy of shows like KPop Demon Hunter‘s Saja Boys. With their high-tech methods, these new characters threaten to make Panty and Stocking’s classic demon-hunting antics appear outdated. Adding to the generational divide, the twins bombard the duo with Gen Z slang, tossing around terms like “boomers,” “no cap,” and calling them “Karens.”
This back-and-forth banter escalates as Panty and Stocking respond to the twins with playful retorts, dubbing them “iPad kids.” Although their comebacks may not pack the same punch, they succinctly highlight the humor in the dynamic.
Among the references in this episode is a nod to John Carpenter’s They Live, with Daten City transforming into a horde of comically exaggerated monsters, as well as tributes to favorites like Good Burger and The Matrix.
This episode introduces Gunsmith Bitch, the show’s second Black lead character. Voiced by Yoshino Aoyama in Japanese and Krysta Gonzales in English, her character adds a new dynamic as a nerdy arms dealer with a penchant for firearms. She proves invaluable to Panty and Stocking when the digital tactics of Polyester and Polyurethane render their weapons useless.
In a climactic showdown, the angels and demons team up to defeat Polyester and Polyurethane, with a comedic nod to SpongeBob SquarePants as their “uncle Rami” emerges from the heavens, bringing the twins back to their side. But don’t fret—this likely won’t be the last we see of them, as the episode’s ending sets the stage for future mischief from the angelic cousins.
What’s truly special about this episode is how it encapsulates the hilarity of intergenerational rivalry and relatable pop culture moments, ensuring that fans have plenty to look forward to in each new episode of New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, which drops every Wednesday on Prime Video.
