Sanji was born as a prince to Vinsmoke Judge and Sora in the North Blue, about twenty-one years before our current adventure. The Vinsmoke family rules over the Germa Kingdom and stands as one of the most powerful families in One Piece. Sanji’s birth was uniquely significant, as he had three brothers—Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji—and a sister named Reiju.

Vinsmoke Judge, a scientist affiliated with MADS alongside Dr. Vegapunk, Caesar Clown, and Queen, sought to create genetically modified superhumans. However, his plans backfired when Sanji’s mother, Sora, resisted the alterations. She took a drug during her pregnancy that preserved Sanji’s humanity, resulting in him being a normal human among genetically-engineered siblings.

This distinction came with dire consequences. Sanji became the target of relentless bullying from his brothers and faced his father’s disdain. Vinsmoke Judge viewed Sanji as a failure for lacking the emotional detachment exhibited by his siblings.

As punishment, Judge imprisoned Sanji in a dungeon, forcing him to wear an Iron Mask. He even falsely claimed that Sanji had died in an accident. Tragically, Sora died due to the drug she consumed while pregnant, leaving Sanji with only his sister Reiju to care for his injuries.

Eventually, Reiju helped Sanji escape and urged him never to return. Though Sanji crossed paths with Judge one last time, his father only let him go under the condition that he would keep his origin a secret. Not wishing to adhere to the Vinsmoke legacy, Sanji walked away from his family and renounced his bloodline.

After his escape, Sanji honed his cooking skills while working on the Orbit ship. This led to a fateful encounter with the notorious Red Leg Zeff. Both ships were caught in a storm, ultimately crashing and leaving Sanji and Zeff stranded on a deserted rocky ledge.

What unfolded next is one of the darkest chapters in One Piece history. As time passed and food dwindled, Zeff selflessly gave his food to Sanji. When hunger drove Sanji to consider drastic measures, he opened Zeff’s bag, only to find treasures instead of provisions. In a harrowing act of survival, Zeff resorted to cutting off his leg to sustain them both.

Sanji chose to stay with Zeff, forming a father-son bond. Zeff inspired him, teaching him to reserve his hands for cooking and never harm a woman. It was also Zeff who helped develop Sanji’s impressive culinary skills and martial arts techniques.

Eventually, their paths intertwined with Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat crew during their visit to the Baratie Restaurant. Luffy’s refusal to let Sanji decline joining the crew led to Sanji becoming a vital asset in his quest to find the All Blue.

Since joining the crew, Sanji has become an irreplaceable member of the Straw Hat Pirates, not just for his cooking but also as a key combatant within the “Monster Trio” alongside Luffy and Zoro. Luffy has recognized Sanji as his Left-Hand Man, a vital component in his quest to become the Pirate King. In fact, during the Whole Cake Island arc, Luffy expressed this value with the words:

Without you, I can’t become the King of the Pirates – Monkey D. Luffy

Sanji has consistently proven himself as the MVP across various arcs, including the recent Egghead Arc. With the arrival of Scopper Gaban in the Elbaf arc, his future role aligns closely with that of the former left hand of the pirate king.

That’s a comprehensive look into Sanji’s past in One Piece. His traumatic childhood shapes his character, making him one of the most compelling figures in the series. Do you believe Sanji has the most heart-wrenching backstory among the Straw Hats? Share your thoughts in the comments!
