The weight of expectations can crush even the most formidable warrior. Just ask George R.R. Martin. The ink-stained oracle of Westeros still hasn’t delivered The Winds of Winter, leaving legions of fans in a perpetual state of anticipation—or is it suspended animation? But even as the icy winds of delay continue to blow, there’s a flicker of dragonfire on the horizon, and it smells like eggs.
While 2026 might be the year the A Song of Ice and Fire faithful finally receive The Winds of Winter, the sequel George R.R. Martin has been working on for well over a decade, you probably don’t need seven gods to tell you that it’s… well, unlikely. However, Game of Thrones fans do have stuff to anticipate more immediately. Season three of House of the Dragon is coming—and even sooner, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which premieres January 18 and adapts Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. In a recent conversation, Martin expressed his desire to pen more of those Dunk and Egg tales.
It’s something he’s mentioned before, and fans of the stories, following the very tall knight Dunk and his scrappy little squire, Egg, would love to read more. Demand will no doubt swell once the show hits HBO. Currently, only three Dunk and Egg stories exist. The first, “The Hedge Knight,” is adapted for season one of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and the already greenlit season two will presumably adapt the second, “The Sworn Sword.”
The Perils of Uncharted Territory: Will HBO Outpace Martin?
Think about a rubber band stretched too thin. The further you pull, the greater the risk of it snapping. HBO risks a similar fate. If a third season materializes and adapts “The Mystery Knight,” HBO faces a Game of Thrones conundrum if it craves a fourth season, lacking source material.
We all recall the aftermath when Game of Thrones ventured off-script. Encouraging more Dunk and Egg stories is beneficial, even if The Winds of Winter takes another backseat. Plus, as Martin aficionados are aware, the Dunk and Egg stories are delightful. Set apart from the highborn theatrics of Westeros, they are intimate adventures with vibrant characters that offer a fresh angle on Martin’s world.
How Many Dunk and Egg Stories Are There?
As of now, there are only three published novellas featuring Dunk and Egg. But Martin himself seems eager to expand that number, which brings both excitement and a tinge of anxiety. Will he truly find the time, or will these tales remain tantalizing fragments? His enthusiasm is a beacon of hope. The possibility of more adventures with Dunk and Egg is something many fans crave.
Speaking on the official A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms podcast, Martin dropped a tease. “There are more stories to tell about Dunk and Egg and their education and what’s going to befall them in future years,” he said, though he added he’d also need to carve out time to write them.
A Glimpse into the Future: What Awaits Dunk and Egg?
Consider the quiet satisfaction of seeing an old friend, years later, etched with the marks of time and experience. Fans of A Song of Ice and Fire have insights into Dunk and Egg’s destinies already—no spoilers!—but to get a story showcasing a slice-of-life moment featuring older versions of the characters would be a treat.
Will George R.R. Martin Ever Finish The Winds of Winter?
That’s the question that haunts the fandom. While the Dunk and Egg stories are a welcome distraction, they don’t fill the void left by the missing sixth volume of A Song of Ice and Fire. Martin’s attention seems divided, and, understandably, he’s being pulled in several directions. Will The Winds of Winter ever see the light of day? Only time, and perhaps a few stern words from his editors, will tell.
However, we would like to get our grubby mitts on The Winds of Winter eventually.
