Resident Evil Requiem Unveils New Heavy: Meet 'Big Mama'

In an exclusive interview with IGN, Koshi Nakanishi, the director of Resident Evil Requiem, and producer Masato Kumazawa unveiled intriguing details about the game’s main antagonist—a massive, relentless monster that stalks players throughout their journey.

Creating a new iconic monster for the Resident Evil series is no easy feat, especially with legendary figures like Mr. X, Nemesis, and Lady Dimitrescu setting the bar high. Enter the tentatively named “Big Mama.” This new creature not only shares a similar physique and color palette with the Pale Lady from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, but also boasts unique segmented, lobster-like eyes and a facial structure evoking a certain infamous demon from a classic supernatural show.

Nakanishi admits that designing this opponent amid a roster of franchise staples posed challenges. He decided early on to amplify her size, stating, “The character was originally smaller, but I figured let’s scale her up and I think that was the right answer. Her overwhelming size makes her presence unmistakable. When players see her, they’ll immediately know, ‘That’s not right. I want no part of this.’”

Like any memorable monster, “Big Mama” is inherently terrified of bright light. Nakanishi noted, “I wanted to add a fresh twist to the traditional mansion settings typical to Resident Evil games. Instead of having fixed ‘safe’ zones, many rooms feature light switches and lamps. Players can create their own safe havens, as this creature will avoid light.”

However, navigating light sources in dilapidated mansions can be tricky. Nakanishi highlights the importance of establishing fear through unpredictability: “In horror, you set rules only to break them. You think you’re safe, only to have the ground pulled from beneath you, heightening the suspense.”

Who or what Big Mama really is remains shrouded in mystery. Fans speculate she could be a monstrous evolution of Alyssa Ashcroft, the mother of the game’s protagonist, Grace. Nakanishi, while aware of such discussions, refrains from confirming any rumors, stating, “As a developer, I find the speculation fascinating, but I don’t want to influence those debates.”

All will be revealed when Resident Evil Requiem launches on February 27, 2026. Are you ready for what’s to come?
