Taika's Star Wars: New Tone & Power Rangers Reboot

The silence in the theater was thick enough to cut with a lightsaber. Then Taika Waititi’s name flashed on the screen, and a collective groan rippled through the audience—expectations were…mixed. Io9 2025 Spoiler

What Happens at Night

Have you ever walked into a dimly lit antique shop, each object whispering a forgotten story? Patricia Clarkson is set to star alongside Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of Peter Cameron’s 2020 horror mystery novel, What Happens at Night. Comparisons are already being drawn to Twin Peaks and The Shining, promising a dreamlike narrative about a married couple adopting a baby in a remote, snow-covered European town. They encounter a series of odd characters in their cavernous, mostly empty hotel. As they struggle to claim their child, the couple seem to know less and less about each other.

Unknown Company

Imagine a soldier, lost behind enemy lines, not just battling the visible enemy, but something far more sinister. Ross Marquand has joined the cast of Unknown Company, a supernatural horror-thriller set during WWII. Directed by Vincent Talenti (Transformers: War for Cybertron) and written by Gavin Hignight (Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance), the story follows a small unit of American soldiers sent to locate the wreckage of an unidentified object, triggering a psychological and moral reckoning.

Taika Waititi’s Star Wars

Have you ever tried to recapture the joy of childhood, only to find it’s just out of reach? Taika Waititi now promises a “fun” and “high stakes” Star Wars film, a stark contrast to earlier statements suggesting he wanted to “piss people off.” Speaking with Variety, Waititi expressed his vision:

I’m just trying to go back and harness a little bit more of the fun from the original films, which is what I remember [from] them. The stakes are very high, and there’s serious things going on, but there’s also a lot of fun to be had in those films. That’s what I was trying to bring back. I was trying to work in a world that was a little bit separate to that because they’ve got so many things going on within that space. For me to do something there, it would need to be a little different and a little bit more its own thing.

What is Taika Waititi’s vision for his Star Wars movie?

It appears to be a balancing act, a tightrope walk between honoring the source material and injecting a fresh, distinctive flavor. Waititi seems to be aiming for a tone reminiscent of the original trilogy, emphasizing both high stakes and humor. The Star Wars universe is vast, but one element connects all of it: The Force. Waititi wants to tap into this for his installment of the franchise.

Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 4

Think about the last time you had a brilliant idea—that spark of inspiration that felt absolutely right. During his recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Chris Pratt revealed he has “a really strong vision” of Star-Lord’s future in the MCU.

The thing is, you know, everything is all liquid, right? And they kind of take things a step at a time at Marvel. I’m happy to do anything they want me to do […] Also, I personally have a really strong vision of what I would want him to do, and I think it’s f*cking great.

I’m down to contribute any way I can to them setting up the next 10 years of storytelling, you know, and I have a pretty strong idea of how I think I could contribute to that.

The thing is, like, when we did Avengers with the Russos, it was an amazing experience, but also a slightly different experience than doing it with James [Gunn]. In a dream world it would be somehow James, but I don’t think that’s likely to happen. So, I’d have to think about, like, who would be the right director. There are amazing directors out there. [I’m] sure we’ll find the right guy…or girl.

Resident Evil

Consider the weight of expectations when reimagining a beloved classic. Speaking with Screen Rant, Kali Reis revealed Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie will be “his crack at an origin story.”

I will say, for the Resident Evil fans, especially people who are gamers, his crack at an origin story—his version of this–is amazing. I think you guys are going to be blown away by his imagination, his ideas, and this kind of comedic kind of journey through this crazy wild time in this Resident Evil story. I think you’re going to be pleasantly surprised.

Blood Barn

Ever felt that creeping sense of dread when you realize you’re not alone? Camp counselors partying at a secluded barn learn the disused property harbors a terrifying secret in the trailer for Blood Barn.

Power Rangers

Remember the thrill of morphing as a kid, pretending to save the world from Rita Repulsa? Entertainment insider Jinsaku claims to have read “bits and pieces” of the script for the pilot episode of the Power Rangers reboot. It reportedly concerns “a small town rocked by a series of bizarre time anomalies, people vanishing, memories changing, and fragments of futuristic tech appearing.” Naturally, “a group of misfits and outsiders are drawn to the center of it all” and so “are chosen to become the first Power Rangers team in decades. But the world doesn’t remember the Rangers ever existed.”

Could the Power Rangers reboot recapture the magic of the original series?

The rumored plot introduces a compelling twist: a world that has forgotten the Power Rangers, adding a layer of mystery and intrigue. The success of the reboot hinges on how well it balances nostalgia with innovation, appealing to both longtime fans and a new generation. The script is a house of cards, but could be amazing if built right.
