Dark Deception: Horror Maze Game Transforms into Chilling Movie

The world of video games is set to expand into cinemas once more, with Glowstick Entertainment’s Dark Deception officially getting a movie adaptation. If you’re not familiar with the game, it’s touted as a “story-driven first-person horror maze,” drawing inspiration from classic arcade experiences.

Launched in 2018 for PC and mobile, Dark Deception challenges players to escape a maze populated by large-headed monsters reminiscent of those in Five Nights at Freddy’s. Given the recent success of the Freddy’s film from Blumhouse, it’s no surprise this game caught Hollywood’s eye.

According to Deadline, indie company So It Goes is spearheading the adaptation. Writers Adrian Speckert and Cory Todd Hughes, known for their work on the horror film Wolf Creek: Legacy, will pen the screenplay. They’re eager to bring the same thrilling atmosphere they cultivated in Wolf Creek to the screen for Dark Deception.

In their statement, they expressed their enthusiasm: “Our production company has a rich love of horror and the horror genre. Deception has an incredible cast of characters and lore, and we can’t wait to dive deeper and present a terrifyingly fun and faithful adaptation.”

With a substantial player base of 58 million and over 6.5 million units sold, Dark Deception boasts an engaged community. While the base game is free, players can purchase DLC chapters, with the fifth chapter set to release in 2025. Though we’ll have to wait a bit for the film, it follows the trend of indie horror games making their way to theaters, like the upcoming film based on the 2022 horror title Iron Lung, directed by YouTuber Mark Fischbach, better known as Markiplier.

What makes Dark Deception stand out in the crowded horror genre? Its rich lore and engaging gameplay provide a unique backdrop, ensuring fans of the game will be eager to see how their favorite characters and stories translate to film.

Will Dark Deception be scary enough to please horror fans? Given the expertise of the production team and the game’s fierce reputation, there’s a strong chance they’ll deliver a spine-tingling experience true to its source material.

Could this film boost the popularity of the original game? Absolutely! Similar adaptations have often sparked renewed interest in their game counterparts, enticing both new players and existing fans to dive back in.
