Every superhero needs their “guy in the chair,” and in the highly anticipated title, Dispatch, you’ll have the opportunity to step into that role.
Dispatch offers a stunning comic-style animation reminiscent of Invincible, combined with humor and a gameplay style that piqued my interest during a recent presentation with the developers. They confirmed that “actions have consequences” throughout the game’s choice-driven episodes.
With over 700,000 wishlists on Steam, Dispatch generated significant excitement during Steam Next Fest in June. Featuring talents like Aaron Paul and Jeffrey Wright, this narrative-driven “superhero workplace comedy” is the debut project from AdHoc Studio, a team of industry veterans from TellTale Games, Ubisoft, and more.
AdHoc recently announced that Dispatch will follow an episodic release format, similar to previous TellTale successes like The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones. The first season will kick off with two episodes launching each week, starting on October 22, and continuing until all eight episodes are available by November 12. Each episode is expected to take about an hour to complete, with the full season offering up to 10 hours of gameplay if you explore everything thoroughly.
“We believe the release format significantly impacts the player experience,” said Nick Herman, co-founder of AdHoc Studio and creative director of Dispatch. “Episodic storytelling makes it easy for players to engage with the narrative, keep up with the story, and share their experiences with friends. Our goal is for players to consider the launch of Dispatch as ‘appointment gaming’ akin to a weekly TV series, rather than crunching through months of waiting for new content.”
In Dispatch, you step into the shoes of Robert Robertson, aka Mecha Man. When his mech-suit is wrecked in a showdown with a nemesis, he finds himself working at a superhero dispatch center—not as a hero but as a dispatcher. Your mission involves rehabilitating a crew of former supervillains, managing your roster, and navigating the complexities of office dynamics while rebuilding your suit for revenge.
Just like earlier TellTale titles, dialogue choices are important, but strategically managing your team of heroes to respond to emergencies across the city is equally crucial. You’ll have plenty of room for customization as you develop and enhance these heroes.
Are there plans for sequels or expansions for Dispatch? The AdHoc team has indicated that while they have more stories to share within the Dispatch universe, a lot will depend on the game’s success upon its launch next month.
Are episodic games more engaging? Many players find that episodic formats provide a better narrative experience, as they allow for deeper engagement with the story and characters over time.
What can players expect from the character development in Dispatch? Players can anticipate nuanced storytelling paired with character growth as they make choices that impact both the heroes and the storyline.
How does Dispatch compare to other superhero games? Unlike many superhero games that typically focus on action, Dispatch offers a unique spin by blending comedy and a choice-based narrative, making it stand out for those looking for a refreshing take.
Are there options for multiplayer in Dispatch? As of now, Dispatch is focused on a single-player experience, emphasizing story immersion.
