Subnautica 2 Adds Proximity Chat, Revives & $100K Charity Donation

I was three minutes from reprinting when my partner’s voice cut out. The ocean went strangely quiet — not empty, just suddenly private — and I realized proximity chat would change tense, tiny fights into real-time saves. You can almost feel the game shift.

I’ve played Subnautica since the first currents; you probably have, too. I’ll walk you through what matters in this new Buddy System update: how co-op actually behaves now, what the generous donation means, and which fixes you’ll notice first.

Patch notes, in motion

I noticed the change the moment a teammate waved and then vanished from sound. The Aug. 19 Buddy System update threads a lot of smaller gameplay moves into one clear purpose: better co-op flow.

  • Proximity voice chat: Voices fade with distance; options for Always On, Push-to-Talk, or Off. That means whispers when you’re close and silence when you’re exploring alone.
  • Revives and reprints: You can now revive downed players before they reprint. If someone chooses to reprint immediately, they’ll respawn at their assigned Biobed. Revived players keep equipment and get a small oxygen boost.
  • Player interaction: Direct item exchange, a Tracking Tag for carryables and improved black box range when carried, and new emotes (Wave, Clap, Thumbs Up/Down, Frustrated) via a radial menu.

Can you play co-op with proximity chat in Subnautica 2?

Yes — and it’s configurable so you don’t have to shout in global voice. Steam multiplayer or Game Pass players can use proximity chat locally, which feels more like team tactics than group chat. If you’re on PC with an RTX card you’ll also see updates to Frame Generation modes (5x and 6x), and Nvidia Reflex now has a settings description in-game.

Why the social tweaks matter

I saw a group avoid a skirmish simply because someone could whisper a warning. Small social tools change what you risk and what you share.

Proximity voice turns split-second choices — when to revive, when to flee — into coordinated action. The Tracking Tag and direct item trading make loot and logistics less clumsy. The emotes are small, but they’re personality; they make your crew feel like a unit, not just three inventories on a server.

How do revives work in Subnautica 2?

Downed players can be revived by teammates to keep gear and regain a bit of oxygen, or they can choose to reprint at their Biobed. That choice creates tension: risk a rescue for gear retention, or accept a reprint to save time. It’s a mechanical pressure that rewards teamwork.

The $100,000 donation and why it matters

I read the press note and had to pause: Unknown Worlds sent a check. I felt a small, unexpected lift.

Unknown Worlds donated $100,000 (€93,000) to The Ocean Cleanup. Fernando Melo, Executive Producer, framed it as an extension of the franchise’s origin — Subnautica began with a love for the ocean — and this money is meant to be practical support for removing plastic pollution. The donation lands like a life raft in a plastic sea and gives social weight to the game’s environmental themes.

Technical fixes and quality-of-life

My early sessions were full of annoying UI quirks; this update removes a bunch.

  • Builder UI now has alignment guide lines and size-snapping fixes. Trashcan behaves as expected (five-second destruction delay).
  • Signals get clearer: icons scale with distance, hover for text, and pinned recipes highlight when you pick up relevant resources.
  • Audio and narrative polishing: localized lines added, pacing fixes, and better VO prioritization so important lines don’t get buried.
  • Music added to Tufa Zone, Thermal Area, and North Coral Gardens. Audiologs now show elapsed/remaining time.

Fauna, tools and the little things

I watched a Hammerhead flinch for the first time post-patch — it’s a small satisfaction.

  • Creature VFX and flinch animations improved for several species (Marrowbreach, Hammerhead, Nibbler, Needlershark, Epicurean, Twin Eel).
  • Feedback Resonator now stuns instead of scaring creatures; Sonic Resonator stun extended to 10 seconds.
  • More carryable racks early on, Bloom Parasite rework, and better Tentacle and spark VFX consistency across the game.

So: better social mechanics, meaningful quality-of-life changes, and a developer donating $100,000 (€93,000) to The Ocean Cleanup — does that shift what you expect from multiplayer survival games?
