Rival Kwon Yul Provokes My Sweet Mobster Uhm Tae-gu

A fun new teaser has swung in for JTBC’s upcoming My Sweet Mobster, setting down the framework for our rom-com’s petty love triangle as Han Sun-hwa (Work Later, Drink Now 2) gets caught between Uhm Tae-gu (Hometown) and Kwon Yul (Longing for You).

But first, we begin with a wistful Go Eun-ha (Han Sun-hwa) remembering her lonely childhood, explaining that, “Until I was 7 years old, no one ever played with me. It was then that I met Hyun-woo oppa. I wanted to become that kind of person to other children. I’d like to meet him again at least once.”

In the dreamlike sequence, we’re led to believe that this neighborhood oppa could very well be our prosecutor Jang Hyun-woo (Kwon Yul). His name checks the box, of course, and he even gets his hero moment, shielding Eun-ha from an oncoming puddle splash. But curiously as Eun-ha finishes her voiceover, the music warps as we cut to the once legendary mobster Seo Ji-hwan (Uhm Tae-gu).

Thankfully, our heroine doesn’t need to be scared as Ji-hwan now walks on the right side of the law and strives to do all that is good in the world. But Hyun-woo’s presence does stoke a fiery anger inside Ji-hwan and our boys begin their quibbling battle through the comments section on Eun-ha’s channel.

To be fair, Hyun-woo does take the grown up approach afterwards and asks outright if Ji-hwan likes Eun-ha. Hyun-woo also confesses his feelings to Eun-ha directly, later in the sequence. But oh the woe of a second lead, let the prayer circle commence for Kwon Yul’s next role.

On the other hand, our hero is still maturing in this first journey into love and responds like a jealous child by tugging Eun-ha’s chair closer. Despite Ji-hwan’s clumsy antics, though, it’s his face that Eun-ha turns to as the teaser comes to a close and we end on her admission that, “It was a good memory, made with a good person.”

Co-directed by PD Kim Young-hwan (Today’s Webtoon) and PD Kim Woo-hyun (Life), with Na Kyung penning the scripts, JTBC’s My Sweet Mobster is slated to premiere on June 12 in the Wednesday-Thursday slot.
