Han So-hee Chooses Same-Sex Kiss in Queer Melodrama “Heavy Snow”: Bold Move or Controversy?

On October 11, a press screening and media event for “Heavy Snow” took place in Seoul. Director Yoon Soo-ik and actress Han Hae-in attended and spoke with the press.

“Heavy Snow” follows the winter romance between Seol-i (Han So-hee), a former teen star, and Su-an (Han Hae-in), an aspiring actress, as they navigate their struggles with honesty and reconnect. This marks Han So-hee’s screen debut and her first venture into queer romance, where she portrays Seol-i as a seemingly confident star grappling with internal anxiety while sincerely expressing her feelings for Su-an.

However, Han So-hee was absent from the event, leading to some disappointment.

“Heavy Snow” began filming in 2019 and includes footage from Han So-hee’s early acting days, as she debuted in 2017. Director Yoon explained, “While ‘Heavy Snow’ began 5 years ago, we continued with additional filming and work afterward. Even last year and this year, up until a month before the release, we were doing reshoots. This is a film that has been worked on consistently, not one we waited to release. I feel excited and nervous as it’s now ready for the world to see.”

On casting Han So-hee, Director Yoon shared, “I first saw Han So-hee through her Instagram and was amazed by her beauty. Her beauty was striking, yet there was a sense of resistance in her eyes. That unique combination made her very attractive, so I offered her the role without an audition.”

Regarding the queer romance theme, Director Yoon clarified, “I don’t think Han So-hee considered the queer aspect important from the start. We never discussed it.” Instead, Han So-hee focused more on the tone of the story and her character Seol-i.

Director Yoon continued, “‘Heavy Snow’ was inspired by a novel about a character who suffers because of her extraordinary beauty, which becomes a source of pain. I wanted to explore the expectations and fixed ideas people have when they encounter beauty, and how that can lead to limitations on the person’s freedom and cause them anxiety. I wanted to raise these questions through the film.”

“Heavy Snow” is set to premiere on October 23.
