Surviving Awkward Dinners with In-Laws in Queen of Tears

The new promos for the hotly-anticipated Queen of Tears introduce us to the in-laws of our Cinderella pair Kim Soo-hyun (One Ordinary Day) and Kim Ji-won (My Liberation Notes).

The marriage between chaebol heiress Hong Hae-in (Kim Ji-won) and commoner Baek Hyun-woo (Kim Soo-hyun) was intended to be an inspirational tale of two people uniting from different worlds. But three years later, it looks like this merger of families isn’t going as smoothly as the couple might have hoped. In the two teasers that dropped, we get a look at family dinners at the Hong and Baek households, and how fish-out-of-water our two leads feel when eating with the opposite’s family.

We start with dinner at Hae-in’s side of the family. Members of the prestigious Queen Group eat a refined steak dinner to the nines, complete with classical background music. We finally get to see the other big names in the cast, such as Jung Jin-young (LTNS), Na Young-hee (Queen of Divorce), Kwak Dong-yeon (Gaus Electronics), Lee Joo-bin (Money Heist: Korea — Joint Economic Area), Kim Gab-soo (Today’s Webtoon), and more (it’s a pretty big family)! Flanked on both sides by in-laws, Hyun-woo uncomfortably glances at the camera while he voiceovers, “You promised not to make me cry, huh?”

But Hyun-woo isn’t the only one who’s uncomfortable. Over at Hyun-woo’s family, where the noble family business is in owning a supermarket, dinner is a much more cozy spread. We meet Hyun-woo’s smaller family, consisting of Jeon Bae-soo (The Whirlwind), Hwang Young-hee (Daily Dose of Sunshine), Jang Yoon-ju (Money Heist: Korea — Joint Economic Area), and Kim Do-hyun (Gyeongseong Creature). In a flurry of arms reaching over one another to grab food, Hae-in mirrors Hyun-woo’s uneasy look, saying in the voiceover, “You’re going to leave me here alone?”

Both teasers end with a cheeky end tag that despite how things look, this is indeed one family through marriage. For better or for worse.

Written by Park Ji-eun (Crash Landing on You) and directed by duo Jang Young-woo (Bulgalsal – Immortal Souls) and Kim Hee-won (Soundtrack #2), Queen of Tears will premiere March 9 on tvN and will be streaming in select regions on Netflix.
