Don’t you just hate it when you’re short a few million dollars to produce a drama with your dream team of actors, writers, and directors? *pouts* Well, we found a way to scratch that itch!
Introducing the new Dramabeans community series Cast Away — where Beanies can advocate for their chosen actors and creatives in imaginary roles.
How it works: Each week, we’ll share a hypothetical K-drama plot with you. In the comments, discuss who you think is the perfect cast to play the roles in this imaginary show.
You can also go wild and introduce more characters, rename the show, pick your favorite director, etc. Who knows? Maybe our collective wishing will manifest fantasy casting into reality.
This week’s K-drama plot: a wedding entourage goes to Mars
When an earthling scientist and her alien groom finally tie the knot, the groom insists on holding the reception in his spaceship to gift the guests a trip around the world. Unfortunately, his soju-addled brain loads the map of Mars into the navigator by mistake. Now, the newlyweds and their entourage are stuck on Mars for 687 days as it recharges for the trip back to Earth.
While growing potatoes on Martian soil is, well, small potatoes for the bride, dealing with their human companions is driving her bananas. Especially when her guest list features gems such as the ex-boyfriend and research partner who’s still in love with her, the well-meaning mom who keeps “tidying up” the ship and breaking things, and the conspiracist uncle who’s hellbent on proving that the groom and his people are planning an attack on Earth.
Will her sanity and marriage survive a year of this?
It’s time to send your favorite cast to Mars! Who is your smartypants heroine who would rather analyze wind patterns than listen to her ex’s hot air? And who will play the alien groom who’s infuriatingly clueless about human emotions: “Mother-in-law said it’s fine to reduce rations by 20% as she doesn’t really need extra nutrition since everyone grows old and dies anyway. Why are you mad?”
Who is this too-helpful, passive-aggressive mom who doesn’t know how to communicate properly with her alien son-in-law (or her own daughter for that matter).
Who do you want as the ex? Will he be a clingy comic relief, or do you want him to be a professional piner who will break your heart? Maybe he will sacrifice himself to protect his rival alien against the kooky uncle. Well, depending on if you want the uncle to be a harmless ajusshi or a surprise killer as is normal for K-drama rom-coms.
As always, you can swap the roles around. Or better yet, add more guests to the list and make this an unforgettable wedding getaway. Come to think of it, we didn’t even discuss bridesmaids yet…
Feel free to request a plot line for future Cast Away posts. We’ll do our best (beep-boop!) to serve a fun twist on it.
