Yasss, they actually went there! We have been joking for weeks about this drama and making 2PM jokes behind the scenes (and here and here), but now the drama’s gone and done it too. In other words, the first teaser for KBS’s upcoming fantasy romance My Heart Beats features the soundtrack of none other than 2PM’s huge campilicious hit song “Heartbeat.” This is awesome, of course, because the drama stars idol-turned-actor Taecyeon (Blind) as its vampire hero.
We don’t learn much about the plot with this first teaser, nor do we catch sight of the cold-hearted heroine played by Won Ji-ahn (If You Wish Upon Me). What we do get, though, are long, ominous, and gothic shots of a coffin while the aforementioned 2PM song — syncopated heartbeats and all — plays in the background. When the track kicks in with the opening line, “Can you feel my heartbeat?” we cut to Taecyeon, presumably in the coffin. His eyes fly open and in voiceover we hear Taec say the name of the drama.
For a first teaser, this does everything I want: piques my interest, starts setting the drama’s tone, and — most importantly — shows me that My Hearts Beats is totally in it for the meta. After all, a story about a vampire comically desperate to become human is a setup that requires an all in approach. There’s no going halfway if they want this to work, and the teaser fills me with hope: they’re enjoying the jokes, they’re all about the gothic camp, and they are leaving no detail untouched (the drama’s title treatment is amazing).
In addition to our leads, the drama also boasts the drama debut of musical actor Park Kang-hyun (West Side Story), along with Yoon So-hee (Peng), Go Kyu-pil (Shadow Detective), Kim In-kwon (Kokdu: Season of Deity), Seung Yoo (The Golden Spoon), and Baek Seo-hoo (Cafe Minamdang).
Directing will be led by PD Lee Hyun-seok (Hello? It’s Me, The King’s Affection) and PD Lee Min-soo (The Stain), with scripts co-written by Kim Ha-na and Jung Seung-joo. KBS’s My Heart Beats premieres on June 26 in the Monday-Tuesday slot following My Perfect Stranger.
