Gen Z Miss Korea 2024’s Directorial Dreams: Following Bong Joon-ho and Damien Chazelle

The 68th Miss Korea Contest, hosted by Global E&B, was held at the COEX Auditorium in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on September 24th.

Kim Chae-won was announced as the winner after a fierce competition with the prominent finalists. In her acceptance speech, Kim said, “I learned a lot during the preparation time for the Miss Korea pageant,” and expressed her ambition, “As a movie director, I want to create content that can promote Korea in the future.”

Kim, who is currently a student at Yonsei University’s Department of Media, Public Relations and Video, described herself as a “student who only focused on studying.” Kim explained why she decided to participate in Miss Korea, “If the film director is a person who blows the message into the media, Miss Korea is a person who can appeal the message directly, so I applied to Miss Korea.”

Kim’s role models are Damien Chazelle, who directed the films “La La Land,” “Whiplash” and “Babylon,” and Bong Joon-ho, who directed “Parasite,” “The Host” and “Snowpiercer.” “I think Damien Chazelle is a film director who talks to really young, passionate, and dreamy young people through movies like ‘La La Land’ and ‘Whiplash.’ I want to touch people’s emotions like Damien Chazelle, and I also want to become a film director who can deliver socially critical messages like Bong Joon-ho,” Kim said.
