It’s time to flip through textbooks with TVING’s upcoming youth comedy Study Group, in which a boy who dreams of being a star student unfortunately finds that all his talent lies solely in his fists. Based on the webtoon of the same name, the ten-episode drama follows our tenacious protagonist as he attempts to pull up his grades and enter a good college.
The teaser opens with an adorably bespectacled Hwang Min-hyun (My Lovely Liar) introducing himself as Yoon Ga-min, who looks every bit the model student. Alas, looks are deceiving. Yuseong Technical High is a school at the very bottom of the barrel, and Ga-min’s dismal grades don’t reflect even a fraction of the effort he pours into studying.
That’s how Ga-min becomes the team leader of Yuseong Technical High’s newly-established study group, actively recruiting new members every chance he gets and refusing to be disheartened despite his peers’ constant refusals. “Let’s study together and make it to college,” Ga-min cajoles, proffering a pack of M&Ms that’ll supposedly awaken one’s brain. Alas, even the chocolate treats don’t sweeten the deal enough, and Ga-min finds himself facing rejection yet again.
According to Ga-min, his study group is acknowledged by the Ministry of Education, lending his proposal some credibility. But the answer is still a resounding “No,” forcing Ga-min to reach for his last resort — the one and only thing he’s good at, a.k.a. fighting.
One exercise regimen, some nunchuck-swinging, and an incredulous leap from a fourth-floor window later, Ga-min finally gets the “Yes” he’s been waiting to hear. “For real?” Ga-min asks with a grateful smile, so touched that he’s entirely heedless of the blood dripping from his scraped forehead.
With Han Ji-eun (Stock Struck) as the study group’s teacher-in-charge, alongside Cha Woo-min (Night Has Come), Lee Jong-hyun (Duty After School), and Shin Soo-hyun (My Sweet Mobster) rounding out our main cast, will Ga-min be able to achieve his lofty goal? Or will he wind up too preoccupied fighting for his newfound friends?
Helmed by PDs Lee Jang-hoon (Miracle) and Yoo Beom-sang (Twinkling Watermelon), with scripts by Uhm Seon-ho and Oh Bo-hyun (Daily Dose of Sunshine), Study Group is slated for a January 23 premiere next year.
