A new teaser has come out for tvN’s upcoming The Queen Who Crowns, pairing Cha Joo-young (The Real Has Come) and Lee Hyun-wook (Song of the Bandits) in a contentious royal matrimony as Joseon’s queen and king.
Providing some context to our sageuk story, the video teaser begins in flashback, taking us back to when our aristocratic heroine and Lee Bang-won (Lee Hyun-wook) fell in love. The two were married on the cusp of Goryeo’s fall, when Bang-won’s father Lee Seong-gye (later King Taejo) rose to power and eventually ended the previous dynasty, founding the new nation of Joseon in its place. In voiceover, Won-kyung (Cha Joo-young) then reveals the promise that Bang-won had once made: to be like equals, always sharing everything and doing everything together.
With the shared vision of creating a better world, Won-kyung had helped her husband become Joseon’s third king. But when we return to our characters’ present, we see that their marriage has taken an ugly turn. An upset Won-kyung questions if Bang-won forgot his promise, provoking him to storm out of the room in rage. He then sits on his throne to address his wife with formal airs, asserting, “I am the king of this country and you are now one of my subjects,” – though Won-kyung argues that, “This matter concerns us as a married couple.”
The intermittent text screens then point to the conflict that comes with being king and queen while also being husband and wife. One of Won-kyung’s many struggles is Bang-won’s dalliance with other women and the sequence briefly introduces concubines, Lee Yi-dam (Daily Dose of Sunshine) and Lee Shi-ah (The Goryeo-Khitan War). As the teaser comes to an end, it’s now Won-kyung’s turn to show her back and angrily leaves the room, declaring, “I do not think you are the person that I knew for a very long time.”
Slated to premiere on January 6 in the new year, tvN’s The Queen Who Crowns has PD Kim Sang-ho (Money Game, Hwajeong) directing and writing by Lee Young-mi (Money Game) writing. With a runtime of twelve episodes on tvN, an extra 2-episode prequel will also be available through TVING.
