Jung Il-woo’s Roguish Turn in Newest Bossam: Steal the Fate Teaser

Bossam: Steal the Fate is MBN’s tenth anniversary special project, featuring Jung Il-woo (Sweet Munchies) and Kwon Yuri (Defendant) as its leads. It’s a sageuk drama set in the Joseon dynasty, centering around the practice of bossam, a.k.a. bride-kidnapping.

Jung Il-woo plays a bossam hunter, someone who gets paid for kidnapping widows on behalf of others (with the end goal being marriage between the widows and the clients). In the teaser, he sneaks around on rooftops to acquire his target as a voice says: “There are people who do bossam to get paid. This must be their work.” Once it’s daylight, Jung Il-woo realizes that he mistook his target and accidentally kidnapped a widowed princess, played by Yuri.

He tries to take her back: “Since it was our fault, we need to take responsibility.” However, when he goes back to her house, they’ve already begun her funeral rites to cover up the fact that she was kidnapped. It looks like her in-laws, attempting to save face, claimed she followed her husband to the grave. Jung Il-woo tells Yuri, “You’re already dead.” Text appears on the screen: “A fate that was changed because of bossam.”

Shin Hyun-soo (Woohoo Waikiki 2) begs his father, played by Lee Jae-yong (When I Was the Most Beautiful), “Please save Sister-in-law [referring to Yuri]. I will convince her to live a secret life, hiding from everyone.” Chase scenes show her and Jung Il-woo on the run because now, she’s a liability to the family and must be eliminated.

Lee Jae-yong refuses his son’s request to allow Yuri to live. He refuses on the grounds that others are eyeing his political position, implying that Yuri’s existence endangers their family’s power.

When Shin Hyun-soo corners Yuri and Kwon Il-woo on a cliff, he is adamant about taking Yuri with him to a safe place away from his father. But Yuri steps in front of Jung Il-woo, saving him from Shin Hyun-soo’s blade and tells Shin Hyun-soo that she doesn’t want to come with him. Text onscreen says, “Stealing fate.”

Jung Il-woo picks up a pair of flower dress shoes and presents them to Yuri. In his narration, he asks, “Since you’re already a dead person, why don’t you use this chance to live a good life?” She initially kicks away the shoes. In her reply, she says, “It would be a lie if I said I didn’t resent you at all. However, you’re both my enemy for kidnapping me and my rescuer who saved my life.” The last scene shows Yuri on horseback, stretching out her hands to grab someone from the ground.

Written by Kim Ji-soo and Park Chul and directed by Kwon Seok-jang, Bossam will begin airing on MBN on May 1.
