Upcoming supernatural-action drama The Uncanny Counter (formerly known as Amazing Rumor) has released its first teaser. It shows how Jo Byung-kyu (Stove League) goes from being a regular high school student to an extraordinary demon-hunting “counter,” after meeting three other counters disguised as tracksuit-wearing noodle shop employees. These more experienced counters are played by Yoo Joon-sang (Graceful Friends), Yeom Hye-ran (Mystic Pop-up Bar), and Kim Se-jung (Let Me Hear Your Song).
The teaser begins with Jo Byung-kyu enjoying a bike ride with his two best friends. To his surprise, later he witnesses one of his friends being pushed up against the wall and threatened by an upperclassman for staring impertinently. Jo Byung-kyu asks why he didn’t tell him that he was being bullied. His friend angrily replies, “Does it matter? It’s not like us two getting beat together will reduce the pain. You’ve just stepped into their trap. What are you going to do now?”
We see the school bully and his friends beating up Jo Byung-kyu until Kim Se-jung shows up. She twists the arm of the main perpetrator, and asks Jo Byung-kyu whether he’s had a weird dream recently. She tells him that he was in the Afterlife in his dream where he was stuck on his bed in the middle of a large ocean.
As supernatural feats of strength are shown, Yeom Hye-ran begins to narrate: “We do the work of the Afterlife. You will join our team and join our same line of work.” Yoo Joon-sang asks, “Do you want to meet an evil spirit?” As he’s sleeping, Jo Byung-kyu’s hand is imbued with a mysterious light, and Yeom Hye-ran’s voice continues, “Your life has changed overnight.” Scenes of Jo Byung-kyu earnestly training are shown, which culminates in him being able to send a flying kick. Yeom Hye-ran says, “This is the work we do.” In the last cut, Jo Byung-kyu strides toward the other three, wearing matching tracksuits, with this determination in mind, “I’ll do it: be a counter.”
Saturday-Sunday OCN original series The Uncanny Counter, directed by Yoo Seon-dong and written by Yeo Ji-na, will begin airing on November 28.
