Currently weecapping: Bulgasal: Immortal Souls
All of Us Are Dead: I hate zombies. Not like a normal person should, but as someone who doesn’t even want to see stories about them. Nevertheless, I plunged into Netflix’s latest to see how I fared (let’s just say I squinted through Episode 1 and that’s as far as I got). It is sooooooo bloody and gory and scary. And yet, there’s something there that made me see why people would/could/will really enjoy this. I love the intro we get to the characters in Episode 1 (CUTIES!!), but unfortunately that cuteness and the promise of a thrilling plot and setting isn’t enough to win over the nauseation of watching people’s jugulars get bit out. *Gets queasy just thinking about it* Hard pass, Netflix.

Our Beloved Summer: Overall, I was pretty happy with how this drama wrapped up. It tied up a lot of loose ends and gave us a glimpse at everyone’s happily-ever-after. My only complaint is that they dropped the ball on NJ’s character. She was so interesting, and it’s like they didn’t know what to do with her after she stopped being Yeon-su’s love-rival. I also wish we could have seen a snippet of Woong and Yeon-su’s documentary because I’m curious to see how Ji-woon would have cut everything together.
Through the Darkness: I don’t know what this says about me, but I can be completely blank-faced and neutral when our characters are talking about murdered humans and missing fingers. The moment someone bludgeons a dog off screen, though, I have to reach for a comfort pillow. Aside from making me want to hug my dog until squirmed, I’m really, really enjoying this drama. I especially like that — so far — each case has wrapped up within the timespan of two episodes, so I’m not waiting a week to find out what happens. I suspect that this won’t be the case going forward, but I don’t think I will be able to put it on hold and save it for a later binge-fest. Too interesting.
What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim: We finished Secretary Kim! This was such a nice palate cleanser after Mr. Sunshine. No one died and there was a happy ending! There’s something comforting about a romance drama that ends with a wedding. Even though a wedding doesn’t always mean a happy ending in real life, in dramaland it’s a nice form of closure. You know everyone is going to A-okay after the credits roll. I think our next drama re-watch will be While You Were Sleeping.
The King: Eternal Monarch: Made it to the finale of this one, too! Not going to lie…I have issues with the “happy ending” of this drama because it isn’t really happy when you think about it. Their situation — traversing back and forth between the universes — isn’t sustainable long-term. He’s a king, so he can’t leave his world, and Tae-ul can’t move to his world because there’s a woman with her face and fingerprints already living there. Unpopular opinion: I think I would have preferred it if they lost their memories and the ending hinted that they fell in love with the doppelgänger living in their current worlds (e.g. Gon with Luna). Also, I’m not a fan of Shin-jae being paired up with Luna. I honestly thought he had more chemistry with his therapist than Tae-eul, so why include the therapist if they weren’t going to do anything with her character?

Currently recapping: Bad and Crazy, Through the Darkness, All of Us Are Dead
Bulgasal: Immortal Souls: Do-yoon’s alive! *does a little happy dance* That scene where Si-ho hugged Do-yoon and reminded him that he isn’t alone, now that he has them — I cried right along with Do-yoon. Found family is one of my favorite tropes, and I’m so relieved that Do-yoon can finally receive the love and companionship he’s longed for. I especially liked his character arc between first asking Hwal to kill Eul-tae and then later rescinding his request, because I understand how bone-deep the desire to avenge a loved one can burn, and how difficult it is to let go of that anguish to focus on healing instead. So I’m proud of Do-yoon, and I hope our ragtag family makes it to the end of the tale safe and sound.
