Octopath Traveler 0: Complete Skill Mastery Locations Guide

In Octopath Traveler 0, you can unlock a plethora of skills beyond your starting abilities. However, access to these extra skills hinges on acquiring and equipping the appropriate Mastery.

Many Masteries are challenging to obtain. They might be protected by Elite Enemies, require significant amounts of in-game currency, or even involve battles against NPCs. Occasionally, you may find Masteries offered in Ludo’s store in Wishvale, provided you’ve unlocked various Trade Lists. Once you’ve mastered all of a companion’s skills, you can use JP to unlock the Mastery for that skill and equip it to another character.

If you are in pursuit of a particular Mastery, you’re in the right place. We’ve compiled a detailed list of all the Masteries in Octopath Traveler 0, including both active and support types. While some Masteries are available in multiple locations, we’ve only included positions we’ve personally verified.

This article is a work in progress; we will update it with more Mastery locations as we discover them.

All Battle Masteries

Battle Masteries, as the name suggests, can be employed in combat just like any standard skill. You can acquire many of these after unlocking all your companions’ skills, while others are available in NPC inventories or in Blue Chests. Here’s the complete list of Battle Masteries in Octopath Traveler 0, organized by damage type.

All Support Masteries

Unlike Battle Masteries, Support Masteries offer passive effects, such as the chance to counter attacks or restore HP after battle. You can equip three Battle Masteries at a time, but only two Support Masteries.

Defiant Spirit When the equipped character has an attribute-reducing effect, raise BP recovery by 1 at the start of the turn. Entreat from Mystery-Chasing Explorer in Sufrataljah.
Detect Danger At the start of turn, grant self a 35% chance to dodge physical attacks 1 time(s). Entreat from Castle Gate Guard at Cragspear: Castle Edoras Gate.
Elemental Expertise Raise damage dealt by the equipped character’s Elemental attacks. Contend with Long-Standing Divine Soldier (Danger Lv. 43) in the Royal Academy of Atlasdam. Defeat King Pardis III.
Evasive Maneuvers Reduce the rate of random encounters by 50%. (This effect is not cumulative.) In a chest behind Elite Enemy in Cavern of Mists
Extra Experience Receive additional EXP at the end of battle. (This effect is not cumulative.) Entreat from Retired Military Leader at Cragspear.
Eye for an Eye Gain a 50% chance to counter physical attacks. TBD
Foresight The equipped character will have a 25% chance to restore 1 BP when attacked. Unlock Mastery in Viator’s skill menu.
Formidable Stance At the start of the turn, raise the equipped character’s physical attack up to 5 tiers when in the front row. Effect is canceled when in the back row at the start of turn. In a Blue Chest in Subterranean Arena (Victors Hollow).
Fortitude Raise the equipped character’s attack skill potency the lower their HP. In a chest in Cragspear Slums.
Healing Item Expertise Increase the effects of healing items during battle. Unlock Mastery in Macy’s skill menu.
Incidental Attack The equipped character gains a 50% chance of also attacking when using a non-damaging skill. Unlock Mastery in Therion’s skill menu.
Incidental Heal After the equipped character acts, gain a 50% chance to restore the HP of an ally in the front row with the least HP. Unlock Mastery in Stia’s skill menu.
Invigorate and Inspire Slightly fill the target’s Ultimate Technique gauge when the equipped character uses a skill to grant an attribute-raising effect. TBD
Invigorating Attack Restore HP equal to 10% of damage dealt when using “Attack.” Unlock Mastery in Macy’s skill menu.
Monster Magnet Increase the rate of random encounters. (This effect is not cumulative.) Contend from Punching Bag in Cragspear Slums.
More Rare Monsters Increase the chance of encountering rare monsters. (This effect is not cumulative.) In a Blue Chest in the Snowshard Grotto.
Preventative Measures At the start of battle, grant self the ability to nullify 3 attribute-reducing effects. In a chest on Shepherds Rock Pass. Entreat from Medicinal Herb Student at the Royal Academy of Atlasdam.
Rear Second Wind Grant the equipped character SP regeneration when in the back row. Entreat from Selfless Priest in Cathedral of Tytos (during Bestower of Fame Ch. 1).
Resilient Stance At the start of turn, raise the equipped character’s Elemental Defense up to 5 tiers when in the front row. Effect is cancelled when in the back row at the start of turn. In a chest in the Cathedral of Tytos (Embervale). In a chest behind Elite Enemy at Cyphlo Banks.
Ruthless Assault Raise the equipped character’s skill potency when attacking a foe inflicted with status ailments. Defeat Vaughner the Man-Eating Miser.
Snatch The equipped character will seize twice the amount when using Steal or Collect. Unlock Mastery in Therion’s skill menu.
SP Recovery Restore SP equal to 1% of damage taken by the equipped character. Purchase from Ludo with Theatropolis Trade Goods List.
SP Saver Halve SP required for the equipped character’s skills. Unlock Mastery in Tressa’s skill menu.
Stat Swap Swap the equipped character’s Physical Attack and Elemental Attack. In a chest behind Elite Enemy in Waterpool Caves.
Stronger Strikes Raise the equipped character’s skill potency when exploiting a foe’s weak point. In a chest in Finesand Ruins. Purchase from Ludo with Emberglow Trade Goods List.
Supporting Strike When the equipped character is in the back row, gain a 50% chance to perform a follow-up attack when paired ally attacks. Contend with Resolute Noblewoman in Donescu.
Ultimate Support Increase the amount the equipped character’s Ultimate Technique gauge fills. Entreat from Aspiring Gladiator in Victors Hollow chapel.
Vigorous Victor Restore 30% of the equipped character’s maximum HP and SP upon winning the battle. Unlock Mastery in Phenn’s skill menu.
Vim and Vigor Restore HP of equipped character every turn. Unlock Mastery in Celsus’s skill menu.

How to Equip and Use Masteries

Equipping Masteries is as simple as learning your character’s innate abilities. To equip a Mastery in Octopath Traveler 0, open the menu, scroll down to “Skills,” and select “Equip Skills.” This will display your companions’ equipped Masteries, organized by Action Skills (Battle Masteries) and Support Skills.

Initially, you won’t have all slots unlocked. Each companion starts with one Battle Mastery slot, and to unlock additional Battle or Support Mastery slots, you’ll need to spend JP, which can be earned through successful combat or at the Training Ground in Wishvale. Characters can hold up to three Battle Masteries and two Support Masteries.

I recommend selecting Masteries that cover damage types your active team may lack. For instance, I needed a Light damage option, so I equipped Luminescence on Alexia, my strongest Special Attacker. This choice allowed me to tackle every elemental weakness I encountered on my adventures throughout Orsterra.
