Well, this is certainly interesting news. Production company JS Pictures as confirmed that they are in the casting stages for their remake of 2007’s Que Sera Sera, and have sent offers out to the original leads Eric (Oh Hae-young Again) and Jung Yumi (Live) to return as the leads in the remake. Both actors are still reviewing their offers, but if they do confirm, I’ll look forward to the two reuniting for the third time after the original Que Sera Sera and Discovery of Romance.
The original drama centered around the fashion industry, and one department store in particular. Eric’s character was a bit of a ladies’ man who only casually dated rich women until he found himself falling for Jung Yumi’s aspiring fashion designer character. I didn’t watch the show back when it aired 12 years ago, but based on what I’ve heard, the show was quite dark and emotionally complex. It’ll be interesting to hear what people who watched the original will have to say about how it compares to the remake, given the more-than-a-decade time lapse.
The remake will be written by Do Hyun-jung, who most recently penned MBC’s Red Sun, Blue Moon, while director Kim Yoon-chul will be at the helm. Director Kim is most famous for his work on JTBC’s Woman of Dignity and 2005’s classic My Name is Kim Sam-soon. The original Que Sera Sera wasn’t a hit when it aired (it got single digit ratings) but it did have a passionate fan base, however small, so I’m sure this writer and director have their work cut out for them to satisfy fans of the original and appeal to a broader audience.
The remake of Que Sera Sera doesn’t have a broadcaster or air date confirmed yet.
