After focusing on films for the last few years, Kim Go-eun (The Lonely Shining Goblin) has confirmed she will be returning to dramaland, to star in writer Kim Eun-sook’s new drama The King: Eternal Ruler alongside Lee Min-ho (Legend of the Blue Sea). Similar to Lee Min-ho, who previously worked with writer Kim Eun-sook on Heirs, this will be Kim Go-eun’s second time working with the writer as well – the first time being The Lonely Shining Goblin.
In The King: Eternal Ruler, the story is a fantasy romance involving two different Koreas in parallel dimensions. In one universe, Korea is the republican state that we are familiar with as “real.” In the other, Korea is an imperial state ruled by a monarchy. However, the problem lies in the fact that there’s a gateway between these two worlds and if–or how–it should be closed.
Against this backdrop, Kim Go-eun will be playing two roles which are different versions of her character in each parallel universe. In the Republic of Korea, she is police officer Jung Tae-eul who fights to protect people and her loved ones. In the parallel world of the Empire of Korea, Kim Go-eun’s character is a criminal named Luna who is lives on the bottom rung of the social ladder and leads a difficult life as a result.
The King: Eternal Ruler is currently set to commence filming towards the end of the year and is being planned to air in the early half of 2020.
