New promos have been released for tvN’s upcoming drama Abyss featuring actors Park Bo-young (Strong Woman Do Bong-soon), Ahn Hyo-seop (Thirty But Seventeen), and Lee Sung-jae (Jealousy Incarnate).
The story is a fantasy that has a dark start with the death of its two main characters. In the afterlife, though, the two are presented with an opportunity to return to the mortal world and find the person behind their murders. Through a mysterious abyss and the use of magical orbs, their souls are thus revived. But, the caveat is that they are reborn in completely different bodies.
The new character posters have a mystical vibe to them and show each of the actors holding a large crystal-like magical orb.
Park Bo-young plays the character of Go Se-yeon. Before her death, she was seen as one of the most beautiful women in Korea. But, with her new body, she becomes a regular girl-next-door. In her character’s poster, she expresses her confusion with the change with the caption: “Abyss? You’re saying I resurrected into this body because of this orb?”
In contrast, Ahn Hyo-seop appears more cautious. He plays the role of Cha Min who reincarnates into a more physically attractive body than his previous self. Although pleased, he seems worried as he asks in the poster: “But. This face… what’s the expiry date?”
The third poster is of Lee Sung-jae who plays Oh Young-chul. Not much is known about his character and he is simply described as a talented doctor who gets reincarnated by accident. In the caption of his poster, he says: “The definite thing is that even God is on my side.”
The newly released character teasers are more comedic in tone and show Park Bo-young and Ahn Hyo-seop reacting to their new bodies. The set-up in both teasers is similar. Both characters are shown in a public washroom, talking to someone on the phone about their change (we can only hear their side of the conversation), and then examining their new bodies in a mirror.
Park Bo-young’s version start with her talking animatedly on her cellphone: “I came back to life. Yes. The arms and legs seem shorter, it’s weird. My face has completely changed. I’m telling you, I really am prosecutor Go Se-yeon. Look, just forget it. Where are you? Let’s meet right now!” After ending the call, she stomps out of the washroom stall as she struggles with a suit that is too big and too long. She screams in frustration, exclaiming “This is so annoying! What is this?!” And then becomes taken aback as she sees her reflection in the mirror. She mutters to herself, “This is me? The sexiness has disappeared, but there’s some warmth… I have warmth…” As she walks away, she continues to say under her breath, “I’m going to have find out why I changed liked this…” As the teaser ends, we hear Park’s voice-over saying: “Abyss. Soul-reviving orb. Premiering in May.”
In Ahn Hyo-seop’s teaser, he initially seems shocked and nervous as he speaks on the phone: “What I’m saying is, I came back to life. And I somehow became handsome. You need to see me. It’s not what I used to look like. It’s true. Hello? Hey…” He pulls at a suit that’s now too short for him and slowly walks out of the stall, clutching himself in disbelief. Then, suddenly, he spins around and shouts out in glee. He happily dances over to the mirror, and marvels at his good looks. As the teaser ends, we hear Ahn’s voice-over saying: “Abyss. Soul-reviving orb. Premiering in May.”
tvN’s new Monday-Tuesday drama Abyss is currently set to broadcast next month, starting May 6, 2019.
