The Amphoreus saga has drawn to a close, marking an exhausting eight-version journey in Honkai Star Rail. With the high expectations set after Penacony, fans were eager for the next chapter, and the Amphoreus announcement only stoked the flames of anticipation. The teaser hinted at an expansive narrative featuring twelve new characters in a territory uncharted by Akivili. Longtime Hoyoverse enthusiasts recognized familiar storytelling patterns reminiscent of the beloved Elysian Realm arc from HI3, and the excitement was palpable.
Unfortunately, Amphoreus struggled to meet the soaring expectations, suffering from pacing issues, a lack of key moments, and a year-long buildup that culminated in a tepid conclusion. Let’s dive into the components of the Amphoreus saga, exploring where Hoyoverse faltered and how they can enhance future storylines in Edo Star.
Could Merging Storylines Have Saved Amphoreus?

The primary issue with Amphoreus lay in its pacing and an overly drawn-out buildup. While Penacony wrapped up in four versions, Amphoreus sprawled across eight. Each update in HSR spans about 42 days—over a month and a half—and if the initial story doesn’t spark excitement, why anticipate subsequent updates? A merging of multiple versions would have been beneficial.
Firefly’s demise hooked players in during Penacony’s first chapter. What was Amphoreus’s hook? Unfortunately, nothing!
Take versions 3.0 and 3.1 as a case in point. Version 3.0 merely served as an intro to Amphoreus, bringing an antagonist that failed to resonate. Conversely, 3.1 unveiled fantastic characters like Anaxagorus and shared a touching narrative involving Tribbie and Mydei, alongside a more dynamic foe, the Flame Reaver. Rather than prolonging the narrative with a tedious subplot involving Kremnoans and Trianne, these two versions could have been seamlessly integrated to form a more engaging and streamlined experience.
The prolonged nature of the story seemed to be merely a tactic for Hoyoverse to market the plethora of characters promised; introducing some as 4-stars could have simplified matters. Flooding one arc with fourteen 5-star characters seems excessive!
Whom to Grab? A Global Dilemma

In Honkai Star Rail, fans meticulously strategize their banner pulls to maximize their Stellar Jade investments. Yet, the recent influx of 5-star characters has left even the most prepared players bewildered. Typically, the game offers a balance by introducing some characters as 4-stars, but the drought of 4-star characters for almost a year has confused many players.
This sudden escalation in 5-star character availability could have negatively influenced player spending, leading many to miss out on strong characters like Mydei, Cipher, and Anaxa. If only a handful of characters from Amphoreus had been categorized as 4-stars, players would feel less overwhelmed and more satisfied with their choices.
All That Build-up for What? A Rushed Finale

A significant shortcoming of Amphoreus was its inability to deliver after a lengthy buildup. The revelation of Phainon’s suffering as Khaslana ignited anticipation for a climactic showdown with Lygus and Irontomb. Regrettably, Hoyoverse waned that interest with several lackluster additional versions.
A notable letdown occurred in version 3.7, where the threat from Irontomb should have piqued the universe’s key players to strategize and act. Instead, action transpired in the background, with minimal involvement from vital characters like Jing Yuan or members from the Galaxy Rangers.
Imagine if Irontomb had been freed right after Khaslana’s reveal, leading to a multi-versal battle involving iconic figures across the universe. Instead, fans were left with a hasty conclusion where a presumed cataclysmic event wrapped up in mere moments, with minimal fallout.
How Can Honkai Star Rail Improve in Edo Star?
As we anticipate the Edo Star update, a pivotal change needs to be the narrative pacing; no single chapter should extend beyond three versions. Short, impactful stories can engage and excite players without dragging out the experience. Moreover, Hoyoverse needs to reintroduce 4-star characters into the storyline cadence to ease the frustration of dedicated players who have suffered from an overabundance of 5-stars.
Additionally, every build-up needs to deliver on its promise, moving away from convoluted character backstories in favor of engaging interstellar odysseys. Given the rich lore and potential for high-stakes conflicts within the universe, now’s the perfect opportunity to unveil formidable villains who command the spotlight throughout multiple versions.
