“Hallorann’s involvement in this mission highlights his desire to escape confinement,” Chalk explains. “He ultimately must confront and reopen old traumas, showcasing his vulnerability and desperation to break free. It’s an incredible opportunity to dive into a character during their most fragile moments.”
Another key character is Hank Grogan, portrayed by Stephen Rider, who finds himself embroiled in drama while working as a projectionist at Derry’s local movie theater. As a single father to young Ronnie, Hank faces real-world issues that reflect 1962 America, a time rife with social challenges beyond the terror of a demonic clown.
Even though Hank is a new character, Rider draws on rich historical context to inform his portrayal. “The backstory doesn’t always need to be narrated. Instead, the emphasis lies on understanding Hank’s point of view and background, shaped by the social realities of his time,” he says.
The show also introduces the Hanlon family, featuring characters played by Jovan Adepo and Taylour Paige. Major Leroy Hanlon arrives in Derry with his wife and son, bringing an intriguing dynamic to the story. Interestingly, Leroy possesses a curious trait for someone in such a haunted town: he lacks fear.
“His fearlessness stems from a brain injury, making him unique in a setting that thrives on fear. However, I think he still experiences subtler forms of anxiety and insecurity,” Adepo explains. “It’s not about being entirely immune to fear; rather, he endures a higher threshold for it, making him a complex character.”
Charlotte Hanlon is deeply engaged in civil rights issues, which complicates her relationship with Leroy, who wishes she would remain low-profile. She grapples with the tension of wanting to advocate for justice while supporting her husband’s military aspirations.
“Charlotte feels a strong urge to speak out against injustice,” Paige says. “It’s a lonely experience, having so much to offer the world while facing systemic neglect. She aims to challenge the norms of 1962 as a Black woman and explore her true potential.”
