Last night at the Game Awards, the excitement was palpable as we caught a glimpse of the much-anticipated Street Fighter movie, brought to life by the collaboration of Capcom and Paramount Pictures. The action-packed trailer was bursting with vibrant colors, reflecting the neon urban vibe of Street Fighter VI. As thrilling as the trailer was, the real showstoppers were the character posters that unveiled the cast in all their glory.
While some viewers loved the campy aesthetic, others were less forgiving. So let’s break down the character portraits and see who nailed their roles as these iconic fighters.
Andrew Koji as Ryu
Ryu is a classic—a simple white gi, red gloves, and a headband. Andrew Koji captures this look perfectly. He definitely passes the vibe check as the legendary fighter ready to take on anyone!
Noah Centineo as Ken
Ken’s long hair gets a nod of approval from me. This version of Ken brings an exciting flair that aligns with the iconic character. Noah Centineo scores points for style!
Callina Liang as Chun-Li
Chun-Li’s look is instantly recognizable with her classic high boots and signature buns. Callina Liang stays true to the iconic design, making her a standout. Big win here!
Cody Rhodes as Guile
Admittedly, Guile’s hair might be a little wild, but Cody Rhodes as Guile is an interesting choice. Besides, a bit of flamboyance fits Guile’s character well. I say he gets a pass.
Orville Peck as Vega
Vega usually oozes flair, so seeing Orville Peck in a full-body suit feels a bit like a letdown. Vega should be wild and extravagant, not playing it safe. Sorry, Orville, you miss the mark here.
50 Cent as Balrog
When many saw this poster, laughter echoed around the room. 50 Cent pulls off Balrog’s look in a true-to-game style but the hairstyle gave me pause. I’m not sure how to take him seriously in this role!
Jason Momoa as Blanka
Jason Momoa’s interpretation of Blanka falls flat. He resembles a over-the-top version that doesn’t capture the essence of Blanka at all. This portrayal leaves much to be desired.
Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim
Now, Dhalsim’s look works well! Vidyut Jammwal embodies a sense of mystique and strength in his portrayal, blending perfectly with the iconic character’s essence. He’s got this one!
Olivier Richters as Zangief
Finally, Zangief is portrayed stylishly by Olivier Richters. He commands presence and hints at the character’s brute strength, beautifully straying from traditional wrestler vibes. Solid choice!
Hirooki Goto as E. Honda
Hirooki Goto’s portrayal as E. Honda doesn’t quite hit the mark—he feels underwhelming without much flair. Where’s the essence of this beloved character? Missed it this time!
David Dastmalchian as M. Bison
Now, here’s a portrayal that works! David Dastmalchian’s M. Bison commands attention with a powerful stance. He captures Bison’s sinister charm flawlessly.
Roman Reigns as Akuma
As for Roman Reigns as Akuma, it’s a hit-or-miss. While I see the effort, the presentation doesn’t quite resonate as true to Akuma’s character—he deserves something more impactful!
Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki
Unfortunately, Andrew Schulz misses the target with Dan Hibiki. This portrayal lacks the lovable charm we expect from Dan and feels a bit off. Not quite the right fit here.
Eric André as Don Sauvage
Eric André does well as Don Sauvage, taking on a character that fits his eccentric vibe nicely. Not everyone might know him, but he brings a certain energy that works!
Mel Jarnson as Cammy
Mel Jarnson’s portrayal of Cammy, however, feels like a misstep. The outfit doesn’t capture the iconic look we expect. It leans too much toward a Halloween costume rather than the fierce warrior we know. Not a great execution.
Rayna Vallandingham as Juli
Juli’s portrayal, on the other hand, shines with Rayna Vallandingham. Her look is stylish and maintains the character’s strong persona, earning her a solid pass!
Alexander Volkanovski as Joe
And lastly, Alexander Volkanovski as Joe has a solid yet somewhat generic look, fitting for a character who was initially designed to be forgettable. He’s spot on for the NPC something a little more distinctive would’ve helped!
And there you have it—a brutally honest rundown of the Street Fighter character posters. While some characters shine brightly, others missed the chance to truly represent their iconic selves. As we await the movie’s release next year, let’s hope for a fun ride in the theaters. Who are you most excited to see on the big screen?
