Evangelion 30th Anniversary: New Short Film Announced for 2026 Celebration

Can you believe it? Neon Genesis Evangelion is inching closer to its 30th birthday! To mark this impressive milestone, Studio Khara is bringing back this iconic series with a short film as part of a grand three-day event in Japan.

The event, called Evangelion:30+; 30th Anniversary of Evangelion, is scheduled to kick off at the Yokohama Arena on February 21, 2026. The highlight of the celebration will be a brand-new short animation crafted specifically for this occasion. Written by the legendary Hideaki Anno and directed by Naoyuki Asano—who previously directed animation for the first and fourth Evangelion rebuild films—the short will run for about 13 minutes. Sadly, for fans outside Japan, this premiere is exclusive to the event, so we’ll need to cross our fingers for an online release so we can join the festivities from afar.

According to the event’s official Twitter account, the venue will feature an amazing polygonal stage draped in neon lights, reminiscent of the anime’s shadowy organization, Seele. And don’t miss the stunning key visual showcasing the core cast, who are all smiles in event merchandise. The three-day extravaganza will also include a fashion show, a kabuki performance, live music from “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis” artist Yoko Tanahashi, and the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra. Plus, be ready for an exciting presentation about the Battle Cats game, which has had some fun Evangelion collaborations—and special talks with Anno himself!

This event comes on the heels of Gainax’s official closure after facing significant financial troubles, leading to bankruptcy last year. A series of legal challenges, including misconduct by its former CEO, added to the tumultuous end of the company. Anno expressed a bittersweet farewell, reflecting on Gainax’s “truly disappointing end.” Fortunately, under Anno’s leadership at Studio Khara—one of the companies spun off from Gainax—the legacy of Evangelion continues with these rebuild films, painting a more positive picture for the franchise’s future.
