Fantastic Four: Key Lessons from Previous Film Iterations

The Fantastic Four: First Steps could have presented a very different vision if it were the first film in the Fantastic Four franchise. Instead, it stands as the fourth cinematic adaptation of Marvel’s iconic first family. According to the filmmakers, this history has significantly influenced the film’s direction.

In an insightful interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Matt Shakman discussed the creative choices made in this iteration, particularly the decision to feature Galactus (portrayed by Ralph Ineson) as the main antagonist. “Doom’s a fantastic character, but he often overshadows others,” Shakman noted. “Previous adaptations have focused on both the origin story and Doom. By avoiding both, we can approach the characters with a fresh lens.”

This innovative approach extends beyond Galactus. Unlike prior films set in a modern context, this version pays tribute to the characters’ comic book origins by being set in the 1960s. This shift also reflects in character reinterpretations. For instance, Johnny Storm, historically depicted as a charming womanizer by actors like Chris Evans and Michael B. Jordan, is reimagined in this film. Joseph Quinn, who takes on the role, wanted to steer away from that established portrayal.

“During discussions with [Marvel Studios president] Kevin [Feige] about Johnny’s past portrayals and our current cultural landscape, I questioned if the traditional womanizing image resonates today,” Quinn explained. “This rendition of Johnny is more considerate, showing less disregard for others’ feelings, and aiming for a more self-aware portrayal of his attention-seeking behavior.”

Additionally, this Fantastic Four film is integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, setting the stage for their continued journey in future projects, including Avengers: Doomsday. It’s anticipated that the characters will eventually face off against Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. Thus, while Marvel Studios is reinterpreting the classic stories, they are certainly not dismissing the franchise’s rich history.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is set to premiere on July 18. For more details, including exclusive images, visit Entertainment Weekly.
