After captivating audiences in Captain America: Civil War and Disney+’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Baron Zemo, portrayed by Daniel Brühl, was in the running to join the roster of Marvel’s upcoming Thunderbolts. This character started as a formidable villain but has evolved into a more complex figure within the MCU, making his potential inclusion in a team-up film seem fitting. He has significant connections to the Thunderbolts in the comic universe, increasing fan interest.
In discussions with Screenrant, one of the writers for Thunderbolts revealed Zemo was initially set to return in an early version of the script. According to Eric Pearson, Zemo’s character was expected to revert to his villainous roots.
“There was a version of a tag written a long time ago where it was revealed that Baron Zemo was pulling some strings from prison or whatever,” Pearson mentioned, although he was not entirely sure about the specifics.
Continuing, he noted, “There might’ve been a scenario included where Zemo had broken out and swapped places with someone. These ideas existed for just one iteration before being shelved. Sometimes, people assume we intentionally zigzag in our storylines, but in reality, we recognize Zemo’s importance for a different narrative path.”
With Yelena Belova now taking center stage in the story, along with the Bob character’s introduction, Zemo’s storyline ultimately did not align with the film’s direction. Pearson acknowledged, “There’s always the debate about how we could cleverly include Baron Zemo, and if it was possible, he absolutely should have been there. However, in this case, the narratives simply did not mesh.”
What are your thoughts on this modification in the plot? Would you have preferred to see Baron Zemo back in action? Thunderbolts is currently in theaters, and the mixes of characters and stories have already sparked considerable conversation.
