Dune: Part 3 Officially Announced, Not Dune Messiah!

Exciting news for Dune enthusiasts! While there’s no official release date yet, it seems that director Denis Villeneuve is gearing up for the production of the third film in this epic sci-fi series. Recent casting announcements have fueled speculation, and now we have a confirmed title: Dune: Part Three, diverging from the expected Dune Messiah which is based on Frank Herbert’s novel.

According to Variety, Dune: Part Three is tentatively set to hit theaters in December 2026. This is the same date Warner Bros. initially earmarked for another major film by Villeneuve. While there was a potential conflict with an unnamed Star Wars project, that has since been cleared, leaving the date currently occupied by the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Given the shifting nature of release dates, it’s hard to predict if Dune: Part Three will maintain its scheduled slot. It’s worth noting that Dune: Part Two also experienced several release adjustments yet still achieved impressive box office success.

Interestingly, while some scenes in Dune: Part Three will utilize IMAX cameras, it won’t be entirely filmed in this format, as previously suggested by IMAX CEO Paul Gelfond. This means that Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey will retain its unique distinction of being solely shot using IMAX cameras, at least until another director makes that leap—possibly Villeneuve in a future James Bond film?

Filming for Dune: Part Three is reportedly set to commence imminently, with leading actors Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya returning to their roles. Fans will also be thrilled to know that Jason Momoa, who played a significant part in the first installment but was absent from the second, is back in the lineup.

Update: It’s official—production has begun! Villeneuve shared his excitement on Twitter, stating, “…on a journey into that land where we walk without footprints,” a fitting phrase for the continuation of this narrative. View the tweet here.
