Krypto: The DCU's Adorable Goldmine Like Baby Yoda

Fans of the DC Universe are in for a treat as the highly-anticipated Superman film, directed by James Gunn, is launching an impressive collection of merchandise. What makes this even more exciting? A special emphasis on Krypto the Superdog, a character that holds a personal place in Gunn’s heart.

James Gunn, well-known for his support of animal rescue, credits his dog Ozu as the inspiration behind Krypto’s portrayal in the film. In an interview with People Magazine, Gunn revealed that Ozu came from a challenging background, having been rescued from a hoarding situation where he was one of 60 dogs before finally finding a loving home.

“When I first adopted Ozu, I was beginning to draft the Superman script. Ozu was a wild, uncontrollable dog, which made me think, ‘What if he had superpowers? We’d be in trouble!’ This sparked the creation of Krypto,” said Gunn. “His unique qualities added an unexpected fun factor to the script.”

Gunn elaborated on how Ozu influenced Krypto’s design: “We modeled Krypto’s appearance on Ozu’s physique, only changing the color of his fur. We also referenced countless videos of Ozu to capture his playful antics for Krypto’s on-screen action.” The resemblance between Ozu and Krypto is clear in the film and the merch that will hit the shelves soon.

Fans may notice a “Baby Yoda effect” on Krypto’s charm in the upcoming movie, though thankfully no Baby Krypto here. Let’s face it—dogs hold a special place in many hearts, and Krypto is no exception. Plus, for those interested in adorably stylish infant attire, Kyte Baby is set to release Krypto-themed clothing on July 31. The cuteness is bound to tug at your heartstrings!

Even though the Krypto plush toys are marketed towards children, many adults like me can’t resist wanting one. I recently visited the WB Store during the Studio Tour in Burbank and fell in love with the Krypto display. This store feels like a nostalgic blast from the past, reminiscent of visiting Warner Bros. stores in the ’90s.

The store features a Metropolis-themed area filled with a wide range of products for kids, adults, and even pets, with plenty of themed merchandise. The pet section showcased hoodies, toys, and a “Dog Dad” Superman t-shirt featuring the iconic hero alongside his pup. I was tempted to buy a personalized Krypto cape for my dog!

If you’re looking for even more options, Sassy Woof has launched its Superman collection, offering collars, leashes, and harness sets that are just delightful. Additionally, Milk-Bone has introduced limited-edition treats alongside Krypto-themed toys that look just as charming as human merchandise.

You can also find plenty of items online and at your favorite fandom retail locations. BoxLunch has just released its Superman collection, featuring classic color themes along with Krypto tees. Additionally, RSVLTS has unveiled a fantastic Krypto print that coincides perfectly with San Diego Comic-Con. If you’re not a dog owner, you might think this is too much, but consider accessorizing with a lovely Krypto ring from Alex and Ani, featuring Krypto soaring through the sky. And don’t forget, you can buy a flying Krypto toy, which will surely ignite some nostalgia for those Sky Dancer days!

The upcoming movie is seeing positive reviews, and the merchandise is designed to cater to everyone, especially dog lovers. Krypto is making waves even before many have a chance to see the film. Personally, I refrain from purchasing movie-related merchandise before screening, having learned my lesson after the first Jurassic World. If you’re keen on getting your hands on some delightful Superman and Krypto merchandise early, there’s a treasure trove just waiting for you and your furry companion.
