MMORPG enthusiasts continuously seek challenges that push the boundaries of what their games offer. Players set personal level caps, tackle content meant for groups solo, and find innovative ways to experience the game outside typical grinding methods. In a remarkable display of creativity and resilience, a group of Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) players has achieved a feat that embodies the essence of Tolkien’s themes of hope amidst despair.
For years, streamer BurkeBlack has spearheaded the Great Hobbit Run—an in-game event where players create low-level Hobbit characters. Instead of grinding for experience, these players embark on a daring journey from Bag End in the Shire to Mount Doom, emulating the iconic quest of Sam and Frodo. Experienced players often join in as protectors, forming a fellowship to ensure these fragile Hobbits can traverse the perilous high-level zones safely.
“I generally encourage everyone to stick to level one or level five Hobbits, whatever they can manage,” BurkeBlack shared in an interview with PC Gamer. “If high-level players spot a massive crowd of Hobbits and want to join the adventure, we welcome that.”
However, the path hasn’t always been smooth. Over the past few years, the Hobbits faced many trials. In 2023, they were engulfed in shadow and flame in Moria, while in 2022, they encountered a similar fate in Rohan, overwhelmed by the living trees that emerged from the forest. You might think of that dramatic moment in the Two Towers where the Hobbits face overwhelming odds, but imagine it playing out with a swarm of them running into an ominously alive forest.
You might wonder, can even the smallest among Middle-earth’s denizens overcome such challenges? This year, the Great Hobbit Run made a determined return to conquer the road to Mordor once more—and they ultimately achieved an unforgettable victory.
After 3 years of attempts, the Hobbits finally made it to Mt Doom and threw ourselves into the lava! Thank you to the helpers and everyone that joined this year long, but sadly, I forgot the ring back at the Shire so we’ll try again next year! pic.twitter.com/SaKSDuYQ7i

Out of almost 200 Hobbits that started the epic journey, between 40 and 50 survived the six-hour trek to Mount Doom. Upon arrival, they found themselves lost in the labyrinthine depths, struggling to locate the infamous crack of Doom, Sammath Naur. In a moment of celebration, they decided that they were close enough and joyfully cast themselves into the volcanic fires. They promised to return next year, confident that this victory will lead them past the right path next time.
