Nicholas Hoult & Rachel Brosnahan Share Epic 'Superman' Action Moments

In a standout moment from the new Superman film, Lex Luthor commands a team operating a supervillain remotely, and two immediate thoughts emerge: “Lex is navigating a complex video game” and “This is a groundbreaking approach in superhero cinema.” Both observations ring true. Recently, io9 caught up with actor Nicholas Hoult to discuss his portrayal of Lex Luthor and this fresh perspective on superhero conflicts.

During our chat in Los Angeles, Hoult reflected on his experience filming these unique battle scenes. “It’s intriguing to be the puppeteer behind the curtain. You’re at the center of action but often lack the full picture of what’s happening,” he explained. “Occasionally, I had the fortune of seeing shots of David [Corenswet] in action, but much of it relied on my imagination to gauge the necessary energy in the moment. That’s where James [Gunn] excels as a director; his clarity of vision guides us while fostering a collaborative environment where new ideas are encouraged.”

A Contrast in Filming Environments

Not all action scenes in Superman were as lighthearted. One particularly intense scene features Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) and Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi) on a beach, searching for Superman. The gravity shifts as Mister Terrific shields Lois with a force field while battling LuthorCorp soldiers, all underscored by the poignant tune “5 Years Time” by Noah and the Whale.

“This marks the first time I’ve discussed shooting this scene,” Brosnahan shared with io9. “It was an absolute thrill—working with Edi Gathegi, whom I’ve admired from a distance for so long, was great. He brings a dry humor to the role that really shines through, especially in challenging situations.” She recalled the conditions: “We filmed on a sweltering 100-degree (approximately 38°C) day in Cleveland, and the humidity made it even tougher.”

The Reality of Filming Challenges

David Corenswet, who plays Superman, chimed in about the filming conditions. “It was undoubtedly a miserable week,” he admitted. “Edi had to perform intense stunts in oppressive heat, surrounded by numerous stunt performers in heavy costumes.” Brosnahan added, “Despite the sweat and struggle, Edi maintained professionalism and delivered an incredible performance. It was a memorable day, watching him fight through the elements to nail that scene.”
