Beetlejuice 2 has finally hit theaters, bringing Tim Burton’s beloved horror-comedy back to the big screen after decades of anticipation. While the sequel has made a splash at the box office, fans are already buzzing about a potential third installment. But don’t hold your breath just yet, as both Burton and lead actress Jenna Ortega have cast doubt on the likelihood of a Beetlejuice 3.
In a recent chat with the Hollywood Reporter, the dynamic duo didn’t shy away from their skepticism. Burton jokingly hinted at being sidelined, saying, “Really? Nobody told me. Maybe I’ve been replaced.” Ortega quickly chimed in, humorously suggesting, “Maybe I’ve been, too. Maybe [her character] Astrid dies and goes to heaven instead. They should just take Baby Beetlejuice on tour and send him to Hawaii.”
It’s tough to gauge how serious they are about a threequel, particularly given Burton’s earlier statement that he doesn’t discuss projects until they are in the works. However, it seems he’s not entirely shutting the door on the idea. He expressed his joy in making the sequel, noting how it was created in the same style as the original, focusing heavily on improvisation. “It was beautiful to see some of the old cast and have Jenna. But it’s like trying to recreate the Wednesday dance scene. I love the characters, but I don’t necessarily see it,” he explained.
Despite Burton’s playful comments, he emphasized that he wouldn’t want anyone else to take the reins on a Beetlejuice movie, a sentiment Ortega echoed. “Oh, I would never star in a Beetlejuice movie not directed by Burton. It would be really wrong to get behind that project. Without him involved, what is it? It is what it is because of Tim. There’s no other film you can compare Beetlejuice to,” Ortega stated, highlighting Burton’s pivotal role in the film’s identity.
