Mighty Nein: A New Animated Era for Critical Role

Fans of Critical Role are in for a treat as the beloved Vox Machina animated series continues to succeed, paving the way for the highly anticipated Mighty Nein spinoff. The cast and creators recently gave a sneak peek at San Diego Comic-Con, introducing us to a new group of quirky characters.

Set years after the events of Vox Machina in the diverse continent of Wildmount, this team includes a colorful mix of characters: the graffiti artist Jester Lavorre (voiced by Laura Bailey), the pirate Fjord (Travis Willingham), the monk/detective Beau Lionett (Marisha Ray), the quirky sorcerer Caleb Widogast, the thief Nott, and the carnies Mollymauk Tealeaf (Taliesen Jaffe) and Yasha Nydoorin (Ashley Johnson). Unlike the Vox crew, the Mighty Nein don’t have the closest of bonds at the get-go; however, they must come together to retrieve a powerful arcane relic known as the Beacon, which has been stolen, putting the fate of their world in jeopardy.

What’s exciting about the Mighty Nein adaptation is that it will not strictly follow the Actual Play series. Instead, we’ll see shifts in perspective, particularly focusing on Essek Thelyss, an elf from the Kryn Dynasty. Initially presented in a less favorable light, he becomes a vital ally to the Nein. Willingham hints that he will start as “not a very good person,” adding layers to his character that make him relatable as he navigates his own challenges.

Showrunner Tasha Huo highlights a key theme: the trauma experienced by the characters. “The show reflects a more mature, elevated storytelling,” she explains. “We aim to treat this series like a live-action production, differentiating it tonally from Vox Machina while remaining in the same rich universe.”

Mark your calendars! The Mighty Nein is set to release on Prime Video with episodes running 45 minutes long, debuting on November 19.
