The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has officially introduced its Fantastic Four—and perhaps even a fifth member. The new film, currently in theaters, revolves around Reed Richards (played by Pedro Pascal) and Sue Storm (portrayed by Vanessa Kirby), who navigate the complexities of parenthood with their son, Franklin. This character not only plays a key role in the plot but also holds significant implications for the future of the MCU. Let’s dig deeper into this intriguing development.
One of the film’s major twists involves the planet-eater Galactus, who is willing to sacrifice Earth for Franklin. He perceives a cosmic future in the young boy: the potential to inherit Galactus’ role as an eternal destroyer of planets, thereby allowing the giant to finally rest. This shocks Reed and Sue, who fail to see anything extraordinary about their son. But who truly knows better? Two incredibly intelligent humans, or a millennium-old cosmic entity? As the finale unfolds, Galactus’s insights about Franklin begin to take center stage.
In a dramatic showdown, Sue uses her powers to fend off Galactus but sacrifices her life in the process. Remarkably, it’s Franklin’s mysterious abilities that bring her back to life, suggesting that he is far more than what meets the eye. As the credits roll, a new character becomes intrigued as well.
Fast forward four years. Franklin, now older, is seen at the Baxter Building with his mom, Sue. As she enjoys a moment with him, choosing to read one of his favorite books, they are interrupted by an unexpected presence. Turning a corner, Sue discovers none other than Doctor Doom, kneeling beside Franklin. While we can only glimpse his green cloak, the scene hints at an intimate interaction, with Franklin curiously reaching out to touch Doom’s masked face.
This moment is crucial. Doctor Doom is a beloved arch-nemesis of the Fantastic Four and is set to appear in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. This end scene serves as a tantalizing peek into future MCU conflicts. While Doom has been referenced before, particularly through mentions of his comic book homeland Latveria, this encounter marks our first visual introduction, raising anticipation and speculation.
However, many questions linger. What exactly does Doom seek with Franklin? How does he connect to the Fantastic Four’s story? And what about Franklin’s powers? In the comics, he possesses abilities that can manipulate space and time. Could Doom aim to harness these powers to conquer the multiverse? Or will the Fantastic Four be compelled to chase after him?
Let’s not forget that only three months ago, Thunderbolts concluded with a scene depicting a mysterious ship with a “4” arriving in Earth 616 (the core MCU timeline). Many interpreted this as a sign of the Fantastic Four’s arrival. But could it instead hint at Doom’s escape with Franklin? Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously indicated that the ship’s origins might not be as straightforward as assumed, adding another layer of intrigue.
Overall, the end credits of Fantastic Four leave us guessing, creating excitement without resolution. Yet, fans can look forward to answers in December when both the Fantastic Four and Doctor Doom return in Avengers: Doomsday.
It’s also worth mentioning that while the mid-credits scene offers the most plot significance, there is an additional scene post-credits. After a heartfelt quote from Fantastic Four co-creator Jack Kirby, viewers are treated to a fun animated intro from the in-universe comic show that Ben Grimm notoriously detests. A delightful finale that leaves us smiling.
