James Gunn’s Superman has taken a step back at the box office over the weekend, slipping out of the top five. This marks the beginning of the film’s winding down phase after a stellar run, grossing over $330 million in the U.S. and an impressive $250 million internationally. Notably, it’s now the highest-grossing Superman film ever in the U.S., not adjusted for inflation, and the journey is on to its next chapter.
On social media, Gunn shared that his blockbuster will be available for digital download on August 15—just a month after its theatrical release. This quick turnaround has become a trend, and fans eager to own the film can pre-order it now for $30 (approximately €28). Plus, the 4K and Blu-ray editions will hit the shelves on September 23, featuring a host of special features as outlined in the Warner Bros. press release:
- Krypto Saves the Day!: School Bus Scuffle – (5:32)
- Adventures in Making Superman Featurette – (60:00)
- Icons Forever: Superman’s Enduring Legacy – Featurette (6:05)
- Lex Luthor: The Mind of a Master Villain – Featurette (5:18)
- Kryptunes: The Music of Superman – Featurette (6:31)
- Paws to Pixels: Krypto is Born – Featurette (5:54)
- Breaking News: The Daily Planet Returns – Featurette (5:23)
- The Ultimate Villain – Featurette (5:30)
- The Justice Gang – Featurette (10:37)
- A New Era: DC Takes Off – Featurette (4:53)
Fans will also gain access to a director’s commentary, gag reel, and deleted scenes coming soon to the digital release, although no specific date has been announced for these additions.
As discussions about the film heat up online, with TikTok creators analyzing it frame by frame, Gunn is already moving on to new ideas. He’s penning a follow-up that will not be titled Superman 2, but will prominently feature the Superman character. Warner Bros. Discovery head David Zaslav hinted at it being “the next installment in the Super-Family,” suggesting a potential team-up with Supergirl or a broader ensemble of superheroes.
While we may be eager for the next installment, it appears we’re in for a wait. The next project on Gunn’s slate is Peacemaker Season 2, which connects directly to Superman. Following that, we can expect Supergirl to arrive in theaters in summer 2026, with Clayface set for release in October 2026. Don’t forget about the upcoming Lanterns series, likely debuting early next year.
