This year has brought a whirlwind of experiences for gamers. With the impending rise of $80 games, some letdowns from AAA titles, and the seemingly never-ending wait for GTA 6, it’s easy to feel a little down about the future of gaming. However, it’s essential to recognize that 2025 has been a treasure trove of amazing games.
From remarkable indie gems to surprisingly potent AA titles, 2025 is shaping up to be one of the best years for gaming. We’ve been treated to a lineup that’s hard to keep pace with before the new year rolls in.
Despite the negativity surrounding high pricing, disappointing big-name releases, and concerning YouTube videos predicting a gaming crash, allow me to inject some positivity into the conversation. This year has truly been spectacular for gaming.
Unmissable Games You Might Have Overlooked

If you haven’t heard of Schedule 1, you’re missing out. This quirky game revolves around cultivating joy in small doses—as you grow goods, mix products, and charm customers throughout town.
The humor starts right in the demo, cleverly dubbed a “free sample.” It sets the tone perfectly.
What’s particularly impressive about Schedule 1 is that it was created by a single developer. This kind of grassroots success story is rare and inspiring to witness.

Next up is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which might just rank as one of the best games in recent memory, racing up to the top of many gamers’ favorite lists. While it’s certainly on mine, nothing will ever dethrone Final Fantasy 7 for me.
This turn-based RPG operates more like an ARPG than traditional offerings, featuring fast-paced combat with dodges and parries that keep players engaged. With breathtaking visuals, one might be surprised to learn that it was developed by a modest team, classifying it as an AA title rather than a AAA blockbuster.
What truly sets it apart? It outshines most AAA games released this year, possibly leading the charge for Game of the Year in 2025, especially given the delays surrounding GTA 6.
Then there’s Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, a game that I’ve found incredibly engaging, possibly even more than Expedition 33 (though I admit, I’ve yet to dive deep into the latter). This game offers a gritty, realistic experience that caters to a niche audience. If you’re seeking a punishing gaming challenge, KCD 2 is likely your match.
With the new Hardcore mode, you step into the shoes of a former peasant now bodyguarding a fussy but charming noble. You might feel invincible, only to be reminded of your humble beginnings when a random bandit appears out of nowhere. Remember to save your progress!
I have yet to explore Split Fiction, mostly wrapped up with It Takes Two (any tips on defeating the toolbox would be appreciated!), but I’ve witnessed compelling gameplay and heard positive feedback—it’s definitely a must-play if your partner enjoys gaming.
Now, let’s revisit our earlier theme of gaming deals. Enter The Precinct, another indie standout. If there’s one game you might have missed, it’s this one.

You play as Nick Cordell, a rookie at the Averno City Police Department, tasked with apprehending criminals—ranging from gang members to the occasional vandal. You can go in guns blazing, but you’ll often find that sticking to police procedure yields better results.
This game employs a high-up free-roam camera reminiscent of GTA 3, yet it brings back the classic feel of GTA 2 with stunning graphics. Not to mention, it allows you to engage in drug-related busts. So, we’ve come full circle!
Instead of succumbing to fears about the impending collapse of the gaming industry, take some time to enjoy these titles while everything else unfolds. One thing is clear: once you’ve experienced these incredible (and less than $80) games, you’ll understand that the gaming realm isn’t “dying.” It’s simply evolving.
While some major studios figure out how to maximize their profits, indie developers and AA teams are diligently crafting the games we genuinely want to play, at affordable prices.
Have I overlooked a gem? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. I’m particularly interested in those sleeper hits you’ve discovered that deserve some spotlight.
