Donkey Kong Bananza: A Strong GOTY Contender with Pauline

Donkey Kong Bananza: A Strong GOTY Contender with Pauline

After today’s Nintendo Direct, featuring Donkey Kong Bananza, my excitement for this game has skyrocketed. It looks like we could be looking at another game of the year contender!

This latest installment has a distinct vibe reminiscent of the 3D Mario team, particularly those who worked on Super Mario Odyssey. My assumption comes from the visuals and gameplay breadth displayed during the presentation, which is the highest compliment based on initial impressions.

In this new adventure, DK teams up with Pauline from Odyssey to unravel the origin story of their iconic relationship. While Pauline appears smaller than we’re used to, I’m confident the game will provide a fitting explanation.

Bananza has players exploring the Underground World of Ingot Isle. DK brings his impressive strength into play, employing a wide variety of melee moves as they navigate this 3D platformer. Notably, Pauline’s songs can transform DK into various creatures—an ostrich for gliding, a zebra for sprinting, and more. Once you acquire these “Bananza powers,” DK can seamlessly switch between them to tackle challenges.

The platforming mechanics are further enhanced by DK’s ability to reshape terrains with his remarkable strength. He can demolish rocks and walls to uncover collectibles and essential items, giving players the option to entirely level areas if they choose.

DK will face off against adversaries like Grumpy Kong, Poppy Kong, and Void Kong of the Void Company, who have unleashed a “banana-stealing maelstrom” threatening to destroy the planet’s core. To save the day, DK and Pauline must battle through bosses and clear paths to the core, all thanks to the enhanced capabilities of the Switch 2. Plus, there’s local co-op, allowing a second player to control Pauline with a JoyCon mouse, which adds a fun dynamic.

Donkey Kong Bananza - All Bananza Powers

Every aspect of DK Bananza is charged with challenges, collectibles like Banandium Gems, skill points for upgrading DK, outfits and skins for added abilities, local GameShare, online play with Game Chat, Amiibo support (including new DK and Pauline Amiibo launching alongside the game), and much more. If you’re as excited as I am, be sure to check out the Direct.
