Exciting news, Borderlands fans! Gearbox Software has been listening to your feedback regarding the absence of a minimap in Borderlands 4, and they’re making some adjustments that should elevate your gaming experience.
Initially, when Gearbox announced the decision to replace the traditional minimap with a compass featuring red markers for enemy locations, many fans expressed their concerns. While I adapted to the new gameplay during my playthrough last month, it seems that Gearbox has been hard at work addressing these issues quietly.

Yesterday, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford shared that the team has developed a combat radar option for Borderlands 4. This radar will appear at the top right of your screen but will be turned off by default, allowing players to decide whether they want this feature. I think this is a fantastic compromise that respects player preferences.
During my early access visit to Gearbox last month, senior project producer Anthony Nicholson clarified that the original choice to forgo a minimap was philosophical, aimed at inspiring players to explore the game world more freely. However, it seems player feedback has definitely influenced the final design.
The new combat radar won’t provide as detailed an overview as previous minimaps, but it does enhance gameplay. It will indicate nearby enemies with red dots and show if they are positioned above or below your character. Players can still access the game’s map from a separate menu.
It’s clear that Gearbox is committed to listening to its fan base. The introduction of the combat radar reinforces their dedication to improving player satisfaction. I’m eager to dive back into the game when Borderlands 4 launches on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on September 12.
