Are you ready for Destiny 2’s vibrant summer celebration, Solstice? This year, the event returns, but it might not be everything you hoped for. While there are some stunning cosmetic items available, the overall experience feels a bit lackluster.
As a long-time Destiny player, I dive into seasonal events as a ritual, hoping for engaging content. Though this year’s Solstice has some bright spots, it ultimately leaves me wanting more.
What’s New in the Solstice Event?
The standout cosmetics include a new armor set for each class, and, unsurprisingly, most of the exciting options are behind a paywall. The Megalodasher Skimmer, a surfboard-inspired flying vehicle shaped like a shark, and the Grillmaster Ghost Shell, complete with adorable chef animations, are definitely worth a mention.
You can snag the vehicle for 1,200 Silver (about €12) and the Ghost Shell for 800 Silver (around €8). Together, they cost 2,500 Silver ($25 or €23), which exceeds half the price of the recent The Edge of Fate expansion. Exciting? Sure, but is it worth it? That’s debatable.
The Ghost Shell, adorned with a chef’s hat and apron, brings your Ghost to life with quirky animations, like juggling its cooking utensils. The unique design is endearing, but as much as I love these additions, the gameplay isn’t cutting it this time around.
Why Has the Gameplay Changed in Solstice?
In past editions, Solstice featured special activities in a dedicated area, like the European Aerial Zone (EAZ), where teams battled to defeat waves of enemies. This year’s shift to the new Portal feature means you’re engaging in a mixed bag of activities already familiar to players. It feels like revisiting content we’ve played to exhaustion.
On my first glance at the quest, I felt the urge to log out. The Portal offers missions and Strikes that feel repetitive. The charm of EAZ is lost in a shuffle of older activities, leading me to question if the new adjustments genuinely bring excitement.
Is There Anything Worth Grinding For?
While there are new weapons to unlock, this year’s quest feels underwhelming. I can’t shake the feeling that the excitement has dimmed compared to previous Solstice events. If you’re considering returning, you might want to check in with friends to gauge whether there’s still something to dive into.
What Should Players Expect Moving Forward?
With the Solstice event concluding on August 19, I personally won’t be logging back in. The excitement just isn’t there for this seasonal adventure. However, as fellow Destiny aficionados, share your thoughts and experiences. Are you finding value in the gameplay, or do you echo similar sentiments?
